Graphic time line (better this time!)
Message #1 Posted by Tom (UK) on 23 Oct 2000, 12:38 p.m.

All,

Here is my chart again with a better format. It does not look correct in this format, you must put in another editor - see below. The end of each line is marked by a ' char. The spaces are marked by a full stop. You MUST view the file in a font / editor that uses the same width for each character (otherwise the years don't line up)

To reconstruct put the text into notepad or similar, turn off word wrap and delete any extra 'new line' chars until the end of each line is terminated by '.

I have done some of the hard work, maybe someone could put more accurate release / termination dates in (to the nearest quarter). I have not included the desk top or palm top machines as they do not interest me.

The 'lost years' between 91 and 98 are very obvious.

Tom.

A cool thing, this overview! And a question: why do you put the HP-16C and the HP-20S into the 'Med'-section instead of the 'Med/Prog'-part? Both are programmable ones, as far as I know.

Yes you are right. I have ammended my time line to put both the HP16C and hp20s in the med/prog section.

Dave,

Exactly, but with an extra new line after 'Scientific ' and 'Business '. I'm sure there are some calcs I may have put in slightly the wrong line, my detailed knowledge is limited to what I pick up from your pages.

The data below includes the hp06(s) and puts the hp30s in the 'medium' section of 'scientific'.

Thanks for formatting it. Could you put this info on a museum page (with any errors corrected and possibly with colored bars for each calc. - indicating rarity as per your prices page?)

Tom Peddle.

I've been thinking about a graphical timeline

for some time. It's been in the back of my mind pretty much from the start of the museum.

What's held me back is that I really wanted it to be graphical with colored lines and all that and I've never known of a truly efficient way to produce it. There's the obvious way of using a paint program but this is error-prone and really hard to update.

Does anyone know of a nice "time line producer?" Preferably a windows program that would take models, start date and end dates and produce a graph like this? I suspect that Excel can do this if I can just figure out how ;-)

It only accepts dates between 1984 and 2049. Also, while it has many formatting options, I couldn't find a way to get multiple non-overlapping calculators (tasks) on the same line so it would tend to get rather large vertically.

Dave,

If you don't mind ASCII art, Excel can do pretty good timelines with the REPT function. For something more elegant, try floating bars, but it's a pain to get the format right (using Excel 97; I've not upgraded to Office 2000 yet on my main machine.)

Well I could probably do ASCII art by hand. With Excel's, charts, I'm lost as to how to produce this specific type of chart. It seems like I need a chart with a variable number of columns in each row.

What about using HTML tables, one row per calculator, one column per year, and using the colspan= attribute of the <td> tag to stretch things over the years?

I use Excel all the time for work. I'll try to do an example of what may work and e-mail it to you.
