42S I dusted off
Message #1 Posted by Tom Johnston on 1 Aug 2000, 1:51 p.m.

Hi all,

A newcomer to this site, I was fascinated by the interest in these old HP calculators. About 10 years ago, I sent in a registration for an HP Vectra computer, and to my surprise I won - for FREE! - an HP 42S calculator. So anyway I dusted it off the other day and found the manual and even the original box with inserts even. Now I feel like I got a real collectors item here. How much is something like this worth on the open market. A quick search on ebay (way expensive on almost everything) yielded prices averaging about 150.00 for models with manuals but no box. Your input is appreciated.

Yes, prices on ebay are between USD 150 to USD 250, mint, complete in box.

Ebay is the worst place to purchase items, though it's the only place I know where what you are looking for is available.

In addition, the prices on ebay are high because if you're looking for a specific item, there is only one or a few available, so you have no choice bidding on it, and the chance is high someone says "if this guy is bidding that much on it, it is certainly worth it, and I'll bid a few bucks more".

So should you intend to get a good price for it sell it on ebay, but make sure there are not many similar items available at the same moment.

I personnaly regret the ebay prices as it makes collecting less fun, people will reluctantly sell an item they don't use or have never understood how to use for a fair price to someone who has important interest in keeping and loving it !

The 42 s has a lot of fans, even if it is not connectable as the 41, its slim line and its 2 lines display makes it a great calc for daily use !

Have fun !

Well, what the heck, I may just put in the classifieds here, and see if somebody wants to give me a fair offer for it. If there's any interest let me know. :-)

I do collect stamps and I know what its like to have the price of something driven up just because "there's a market for it out there".

Check out this deal, two weeks ago I bought a used HP42S in mint condition (no box or manual but I had my own anyway) for $50.00 CDN. My point is the deals are out there if you are patient. I would like to purchase more of these units and am willing to pay up to $75.00 CDN.
