HP41CV--Clean Keys
Message #1 Posted by Tom Walker on 31 Jan 2000, 3:25 p.m.

I have an HP41CV which just started doing odd things which I believe may be caused by dirt or dust between the keys and contacts. I would like to clean those contacts but really don't know how to take the outside case apart! Looks like it might be friction and could be pried apart, but I'd like some expert guidance. Someone in this forum mentioned they had cleaned the contacts and corrected a similar problem. Any ideas would be helpful. Tom

my expert advice is: its ready to emplode and it could take out an entire city block. so send it to me postage paid tonight before its too late. if, on the other hand you want to take the risk; mine got pretty dirty before i learned to put it in a baggie and ive done this on mine and for other surveyors:

-copy your programs or kiss them goodbye -put it on a white towel -take out the batteries -pull off the little rubber feet and take out the screws. thats lefty loosy-rightsy tightsey comes later -take off the back & u shaped spacer & black plastic sheet -sit them so you know how they came off -using the red tube, squirt "tv tuner cleaner" into each hole and mabye twice in the ones behind the problem keys -let it dry out for a few hours -reassemble it being VERY GENTLE tightening thoes four screws or youll strip one and be up the creek -if, in the future you cant keep it out of a dusty environment; you can buy dust protectors for h p calculators at any drug store. ask for trojan unlubricated

buen suerte - d
