HP-65 works only with adapter: why?
Message #1 Posted by Gianmaria Porrini on 4 June 1999, 4:02 p.m.

I need a good piece of advise... I don't know why my HP-65 works only with wall adapter and not with battery. Cells are news for sure. Thanks!

Take a look at:

http://www.hpmuseum.org/batts/battery.htm

The most common problem is a weak or dirty spring connector where the charger plugs into the calculator.

Thanks Dave but I am sure that contacts are clean without corrosion and battery are fresh, there are no broken wire... the calculator is like new. Thanks.

Dave was referring to problems with the connector where the charger plugs in, not where the batteries go.

A quote from the page he suggested you visit:

"Sometimes, classic batteries seem to be dead because surface corrosion has built up in the springy piece that connects two of the charging posts when the charger cable is removed. Try cleaning them with a pocketknife or fine sandpaper."

There is a diagram of the offending part on that page too.

Thanks Dave and thanks a lot Steve too!! When I opened the calculator to replace the pinch-wheel I reassembled everything too fast and forgot to apply the little gold springy piece... now the calculator is fully functioning also with battery. Thanks again!!!
