Interesting that a flying company (I was assuming that it was a window) would equip the pilots with iPads to check the route.

Interesting usage.

And how would you use the dm42 there? Has it the gps too?

Must be the altitude stage of the beta testing Smile

lack of L register (LASTx) in upper display indicates out of date firmware.

cheese looks OK, though.

RE: DM42 News
Lots of answers.

iPad is NOT primary navigation tool by any means. Flightdeck is paperless now. Charts are on the iPads, manuals on iPad, weather also and with coming wifi updated realtime weather instead of stale charts at flight ops whichbecome twelve hours old prior to landing on long hauls.

So everything that was paper is now iPad. Nice to have a bonus of a GPS which allows the aircraft position to be overplayed on the aviation charts and wifi.

The nav system of the aircraft consisting of two GPS, two FMC'S and etc plus the FMC computers for route loading.

Yes, dm42 arrived in mail the day I left (Thursday) and I have not upgraded the firmware et.

Cheese was good and I am going to make a plastic base with Velcro for the 29E. I will use the window clipboard to hold it in position.

See the following for HP calc usage on the flight deck:

HP calcs on the flight deck

Not required but fun to have and some routines augment the flight deck duties nicely. The DM 42 will receive all my 41 and 42 routines relating to work. That is why I wanted it to have dynamic time functions (ala 41c) and print capability. No GPS but that is okay.

Interesting that a flying company would equip the pilots with cheddar cheese to prevent the HP29e from sliding off the iPad. And I'm not sure whether the smell can distort the GPS accuracy. Smile

Interesting usage.

I updated the firmware just before the flight and forgot to install the rubber feet! The cheddar cheese was the least slippery object in the cockpit!

Cheese is the mother of invention!

It resonates at 60hz making it a good augment antenna (not).

Hold on. I know it is ot but I need to ask.

You have a wifi on the plane that is somehow connected to Internet access? How? I mean if you fly over water (Pacific, Atlantic?) at most you can get satellite link, but what about the upload? I'm surprised.

Thanks for the video.

Every ocean ship uses internet communication via satellite today. It is common to have a bidirectional satellite communication, however with much slower bandwidth than terrestrial cables.

Understood, but is not an aircraft too fast for satellite communications? A ship is relatively slow.

Anyway saw the video, very interesting, especially the fuel computations.

RE: DM42 News
We use GPS and therefore satellite communications for primary navigation. Also satellite phone for communication wth Air traffic control during polar operations and high solar activity which degrades HF. WIFI via external antenna and multiple satellite tagging would be seamless.

Back to the DM 42, must update Sunday so I can start programming. At the moment version 1 does not allow XEQ with numeric labels. I understand version 2 has fixed this.

Also noticed that the alpha period is invoked by pressing the decimal point in alpha mode, or by going to the alpha menus. It is also invoked by pressing alpha shift period. I would have thought the latter would default to comma. Again, this too is being considered. That's what beta is all about.

My case and key presses are perfect! I have a 32kb 42s with 12kb of programming so I will be uploading by keyboard to free 42s so I can port to the DM 42 later.

Don't do that unless you actually enjoy entering that much code by hand. I'd recommend using INPRT to get the code out of your 42S: http://www.hpcalc.org/details/2296

RE: DM42 News
I just realized: if you are going the INPRT route, you may need something to convert the non-ASCII characters in the captured print-out to Free42-compatible UTF-8 encoded Unicode. I don't know if such a converter exists, and Paste in Free42 does expect Unicode.

I'll see what I can do about that. Writing a simple command-line converter is probably the easiest solution.

You might try the on-line Unicode converter at https://r12a.github.io/apps/conversion/. It escapes Unicode characters into about any format imaginable.

It doesn't look like that page handles the conversion from the HP-82240A/B character sets to Unicode.

It's not a big problem, though. Given the INPRT-captured output from a program like...

00 { 31-Byte Prgm }
01▸LBL "CHARS"
02 0.255
03▸LBL 00
04 CLA
05 AIP
06 ├": "
07 XTOA
08 PRA
09 ISG ST X
10 GTO 00
11 END

...it should be easy to write a converter from INPRT to Free42-digestible Unicode.

Apart from the nonexistent ports the main reason I always found the HP 42S a very cumbersome machine was that it would and could never catch up to the HP-41's clarity and intuitiveness of command entry and alpha modes.

Funny how different people are! I find the 42S to be much easier to use than the 41. I'm constantly referring to the 41 manual to do anything while I was using the DM42 within a day without looking at the manual!

My comment was about the "letter-challenged" HP41" as Luigi put it.

I think it all boils down to what you are used to. And those operators on the wrong side!!! <big grin>

Indeed. That is the main reason why I do hope that the DM42 chassis will one day not only house a DM43 but also a DM41.

The hardware alone is a godsend. Now if only keyboard variations are to be had for a decent price and one of the wizards of this forum devotes their time to the needed firmware...
