HP 65/67/97/41 card reader - lubrication of worm drive?
I've repaired a couple of card readers, and was wondering about lubrication for the worm drive - should I put some lubricant on the screw and gear, or leave them dry? If I should lubricate it, what should I use?

The one I'm working on now squeals when the motor is running - perhaps some grease on the gears will quiet it down?

Th squealing comes from the bearings in the motor becoming dried out. If you were to take the motor out, with no load, and let it spin, you would probably hear the squeal at certain RPMS.

I have revived some by placing the motor vertically in a vise and letting oil seep in from the drive side.

Thanks, I'll take out the motor and see if it still squeals - I just read that the squealing could also be the screw gear against the bearing.

Back to my original question - should I leave the gears dry, or should I put some grease on them?

I use lithium soap grease, Lubriplate 630, in particular.

Thanks Katie, I'll get some.
