2.02 Bug HP-35
At first I thought the seller was crazy for asking $2500 for a 35 with the 2.02 bug, but if true, this is the 35 used to discover the 2.02 bug sold buy the guy that discovered it.

The Errata page described that bug far before his call to HP.

Yes, I just saw this one myself, and I was going to post about it if it was not already posted.

Is it actually possible that this fellow is the discoverer of the 2.02 bug?

RE: 2.02 Bug HP-35
From the listing:

Seller: "Hey, I found the 2.02 bug."
HP: "!"

What might have happened next:

<2 months later...>
HP: "We'll replace it."
Seller: "No, I'll just stick it in a drawer with the original case and handbook."
HP: "!"
Seller: "I just paid 2016 $2,260 USD equivalent. In 44 years I'll sell it for $2,500 without any documentation that I'm the original reporter. The return will be higher than the interest rate that year."
HP: "..."
Seller: "Do you have any more WOW L@@K! ULTRA-RARE units you're about to scrap?"
HP "?!?"

This Calculator thinks exp(ln(2.02) = 2.

Even if this is the 35 used to discover teh bug? Does it makes it more worthy than another 35 with this bug? Not even for HP-Collection, sorry.

Let's consider for a moment that the calculator up for auction is the calculator used to find the 2.02 bug. That was over 40 years ago, not only was a battery recharge required, a battery rebuild was also required. It's likely that the unit was powered off while the pack was rebuilt.

So, if the memory was lost during the battery rebuild then the display/X-value was cleared. The 2.02 we see on the display is not the same 2.02 that was used to discover the bug. The 2.02 in the display is a reproduction.

The listing should be amended with the following disclaimer:
  • The 2.02 in the display is not the actual 2.02 that was used to find the bug.

If it were the original 2.02 in the display, then the calculator would be worth much more. This was obviously rekeyed...

maybe could be interesting for collectors (if available) a mail exchange between the factory and the seller, but not, actually, the calculator, I'm agreee with you, more than another with the same bug Smile

Would a 41 that's been to space be more valuable than another? Of course it would.

The significance of the event might not be as grand, but it does make that calculator unique, and that makes it more valuable.

LOL about the actual numbers displayed, etc.

Hi Dave, how are you?
I understand what you mean, under that point of view it could be unique, I agree, but he has to prove it (difficult challenge I think, from the description in the auction it is not clear)...

LOL of course about the other... Smile

For me it does not make a difference as I'm interested in the calc, not in the story of it, but I would also say there has to be a prove....

Hi aurelio,

I'm doing fine, thanks. Just hit 1000 posts! I'm down to an average of about one per day. And you?

If I've learned anything from watching Pawn Stars, it's that you can claim anything about an item to increase it's value, but if you can't prove it then it means nothing. The 35 seller claims that he was the guy that discovered the bug and with that calculator, but he has no proof (I asked). Consequently it's no more valuable than any other 35 with the bug. I believe I've seen these for around $200 before, so $2500 is way too much.

Dave

RE: 2.02 Bug HP-35
I believe it is hogwash.

From this site:
http://www.hpmuseum.org/hp35.htm

From the section HP Integrity and "The Bug":
Quote:Dave Packard asked what they were going to do about the units already in the field and someone in the crowd said "Don't tell?"

How could anybody think of "not telling" if somebody "in the field" had reported it in the first place? "Not telling" would only work if they thought people in the field wouldn't discover it.

No, I think it was more likely that due to the time consuming verification, units were sold whilst the verification process was still in progress. It is thus likely that the bug was found by HP themselves during this on-going verification.

RE: 2.02 Bug HP-35
Hello all,

collectors often pay high prices for something because of the symbolic value of something.

For me it looks like a trick to drive the price in higher region: tell an interesting story.

In germany there exists a nice saying: Every day awakes a fool, you only have to find him (my own translation, if somebody knows a better one, share it!).

Quite the same here in Italy... ogni giorno nasce un cucco, beato chi lo cucca!
