Never looked at it this way.

Not in its day, but I guess Walter would ostracize a 43S with module bays as supercarrier class...

Might well happen - I like ὀστρακισμόι Wink
IIRC, the 43S will feature a micro-SD port.

Yes, and USB, I gather. And those two will be more than enough for me, especially if somebody finds a way to hook a printer to the USB port for direct printing.

But please DO remember what makes the 20B, the 30B and the 15C LE so special and allowed you and your team to do that tremendous work of yours: Ready acccess to bus and firmware to tinker and flash.

It would be a pity if the 43S where not open in that sense...

a.n.

p.s. And don't forget to implement those keyboard overlay slots!

I promise I won't. I think, however, it's more important that Eric and Richard won't forget that.

That's the problem with USB masters, they need drivers to support a myriad of different peripherals. If an operating system is used, this isn't a major problem but when you're coding bare on the machine, it can be a problem.

Thus, calculators either work with one printer (protocol) or none. Thus, we need to point out THE printer - it may well become the same as for the HP-42S, -48x, etc. again.

Postscript?

Don't know how much trouble it would cause to implement all necessary protocols, but I'd prefer a wireless connection over USB. Wireless LAN would be great.

Space requirement depend on the protocols to implement I suppose. There's Wifi for the Arduino, so no excuse here.

Well, well, but it's all vapourware (TM) until we get the real thing. And until then we don't know too much about the space we may have or lack for storing/implementing whatever kind of printer protocol, do we? So discussing that is pretty much for free but has little impact on what's going to come IMHO.

It was merely a proposal, not meant to be discussed in this thread.

It's certainly not a showstopper to exclude exciting and unique features from a couple of hundred Dollar device. No need to make it part of the IoT or to make connecting it more comfortable. We all love cables everywhere.

;-P.

Just go on. After Xmas is before Xmas. But sorry I've to leave for the dryer due to all that vapour.

…or PCL or a sub-set of them? I like this idea because it would be one way to preserve the carefully elaborated “typography” on 43s’ display. And it’s easy to display or convert PostScript with open-source tools.

RE: 43s status
It was nice if we could have a draft of the project specification.
Surely the authors must have one by now.

The 43S source forge repository was updated on 2014-04-30.
The project description mention USB, SD, an I/O capability to interact to a host computer:

This project is to develop firmware for a pocket calculator that is a super-set of the legendary HP-42S RPN Scientific. We strive to create a serious scientific instrument again like we did with the WP 34S (look here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/wp34s/).

WP 43S is going to grow on our own hardware now. It features a state-of-the-art display, a USB port, an SD port, and eight rows of keys - one of them for softkeys.

WP 43S is going to come pretty close to the ultimate RPN scientific calculator - at least that's what we will be trying to reach. That means it will be instant-on, including all the mathematics you can expect in such a package, all the keystroke programming capabilities you need to solve repetitive as well as iterative problems easily, and all the I/O channels for reliable backup and easy linking to an arbitrary host computer.

Right now, the prototype hardware is under development still - and the firmware team is waiting for it to start its work asap.

That's nothing more than a very keen assumption. Question 1: who are the authors?

You kill my dreams to have a super charged HP-42S to play with, Walter Sad
I guess that I will have to start looking for a used HP-42S in the TAS to join my collection then...

Olá, Jose, how about attenuating your reactions a bit? I just indicated there's no overall project spec yet (and I won't write one). If anybody has one at all, Eric and Richard are the highest suspects IMHO - but I didn't see any real spec yet anywhere. Nevertheless, don't you despair! I'm convinced the 43S will (over)come some day (I just have absolutely no idea when).

Hallo, Walter,
I understand, it was just a small parody from my part. I can wait! Smile
But I am acquiring a HP-42S as well, because everybody praises its virtues so much that I feel the need to have one in my collection.

Mit besten Grüßen,
Jose

The 42s was fantastic for what it was, a replacement for the 15c. The biggest downside is no IO capability.

The only other thing that would have been nice and easy considering the technology of the time is fractions like the 32Sii

I've never understood this "obsession" with fractions. I don't find them useful, at all.
Could it be because of your measuring system?
I really want to understand, no offence taken, please. :)

Wikipedia says "The HP-42S was released as a replacement for the aging HP-41 series"

The 15C was replaced by the 15C LE which I use everyday :-)
Oh by the way that reminds me I have to vacuum clean the Prime...
