RE: Blue 50g in Germany at 70 EUR
This morning I received the hp 50g blue. The printed manual is in four languages, but not in English. Do any of you have English Quick Start Guide pdf file? Please.
The calculator is very nice. I like it. Little by little I begin to learn to use. If will be any questions, I will ask here in the forum.

Thank You. But there is no Quick Start Guide, that came with calculator (printed ~ 60 pages). It is not on CD, that came with calculator too. There is old start guide (~ 180 pages) on HP website.
Printed manual is dated to the year 2009.

eBay-user lapkom24.pl sells the black 50g at a similar price incl. s&h from Poland to whole EU. There are 14 remaining, and likely I'll again wait for too long until I know I want one Big Grin.

RE: Blue 50g in Germany at 70 EUR
I insert 2 GB sd card into the calculator. SD card test - OK. But the calculator could not format the card. File manager shows the file "SYSTEM~1" in the SD card. With file "SYSTEM~1" nothing can be done. Is it normal? Is it correct to use such a card? It seems everything works well. I understand that it is better to use SD card < or = 1 GB in HP 50g, but it is very difficult to find a 1 GB SD card today.

How did you try to format the card? There is a procedure in the User Guide on p. 26-8. Did it give an error message?

An alternate way of formatting is to use the [FORMA] soft-key within the File manager. Have you tried this?

Lastly, you can also format the SD card in a PC, just be sure to format using FAT16 or FAT32, the 50g will not recognize any other formats.

RE: Blue 50g in Germany at 70 EUR
Thank You for answer.
I tried to format the 2 GB SD card with the both methods described in manual 26-8. Result one - FORMAT FAIL. I formated card in PC to FAT16 file system. The calculator recognizes card, but it can not be formatted. Maybe it is not possible format SD cards larger than 1 GB in HP 50g. But there is one file "SYSTEM~1" in SD card. Is it only some protected area on SD card, that do not disappear until card is not formatted in HP 50g? Maybe it to stay? It looks like the card works well.

After you format the card in a PC, do not look at the card in File Explorer or any other program, just immediately remove it from the PC after telling it to 'Safely Remove' the card. This should prevent creation of the System file. Note that the System file does cause problems and won't affect the 50g. But it may bug you to see it all the time (it would me) so this idea may help.

Thank You for answer.
Tried it all ways. Formatting the card on PC and then inserting the card into the calculator, in calculator file manager always appears undeletable "SYSTEM ~ 1". Then I formated the card in my camera, after which did not appear any file in calculator file manager. So this hidden file is created hopelessly when I putting card in my computer (I have Windows 8.1). There is no sorrow, in any case, using the SD card between a calculator and a computer, it will appear.
What else I do clear - it is not possible to format 2 GB SD card in HP 50g calculator. NO POSSIBLE.
Problem is solved.

That's strange, since usually the camera creates the folders according to the DCF standard, i.e. a folder named DCIM in the root directory and at least one subfolder where the images are stored (e.g. 100CANON, depending on camera manufacturer and model).

All this sounds like the 50g simply does not support the SD 1.1 specification. When the calculator was introduced in 2006, this was nothing new. The current standard was SD 2.0 which supports SDHC cards and capacities up to 32 GB.

Does anyone have some kind of information on this? Did HP actually implement an outdated specification like SD 1.0?

When I acquired a 50g I discovered the same issue with the 2GB SD cards. Something led me to this utility: SD Card Formatter. After formatting the card with the utility it worked fine.

The 50g was introduced in 2006, while its predecessor 49g+ appeared in 2003.

In 2003 SD 1.0 was the commonly used standard. I assume this is what's implemented on the 49g+. Too bad the 50g was not updated in this regard – actually the standard in 2006 was two generations ahead (1.0 > 1.1 > 2.0).

Tim, can we take this as a confirmation that the 50g only supports SD 1.0, or at least that SD cards beyond 1 GB are not reliably supported?

Dieter

My camera creates the folders on SD card when first picture is taken. When I formated the SD card on camera and immediately removed it from camera, there did not files on the SD card. Only the card had name that appeared in calculator file manager as deletable item.
