Last 71B?
i noticed that one of my two hp 71b's was made late in '89 (date code 2949). while information about early 71b's can be easily found, i was not able to find information about the last one known. maybe the group can shed some light upon this?

thank you,
hans

Interesting question. 2949 is quite late, I can check mine later, I know I have at least 1 from '89. I have read (somewhere along the way) of machines made in 1990, but when asked for proof, no photos were provided, so likely a mistake.

Mine is 2635, I'm assuming it is no way special in any regard.

Maybe it is. Does it have any interesting modules, backlit display, custom bezel, was it previously owned by the Pope?

Aha! One of mine is 2951A00046, obviously the very last HP-71B ever manufactured and it obviously belongs in a museum, along side the serial number 0001A00001 machine, the first ever made. Of course, such an arrangement could only come at a special price...

Only kidding Matthias. Wink

It was a good question though, something we rarely ever discuss here. I had no idea I had one this late. It came from TAS about a year ago.

32k ram, and a 41 translator. HP-IL module, no card reader. I do have the HP touchpad keyboard cover thingy. Apparently they are slightly rarish.

It smells like my garage a little. It was stored without batteries so the compartment is clean.

I have 2 port covers for sure, and the other 2 might be in the hardware box.

I barely used it, I definitely favored the 41.

Please post some photos of the touchpad cover, on and off the machine; I don't recall one of these for the 71B. Could be very rare.

RE: Last 71B?
I'll try to get some pics later, despite my apparent savvy with 41 hardware, my Droid cell phone and I have never bonded. It HATES me with a Godly hate.

Sigh.

More info on the HP71B touchpad, it is listed in the EduCALC 1991 flyer I have as follows:

(no picture)

ruggedize your 71B for hazardous duty
. . . resists spills and spatters as well as dust and grit. Snaps neatly in place over your keyboard, has all key legends reproduced in their correct colors

Stock #810 [HP71 Touchpad] List $29...................................$12.95 (discount price of $23.95 is crossed out)

Curiously, mine has 'f key' yellow lettering on the ATTN, and my actual HP-71B has silver lettering for the ATTN. Funny they would make a point in the ad that was not correct. The steep discount is interesting.

Also, most everything in the EduCALC catalog is listed with the HPmodel # as the stock number. 810 doesn't strike me right off the bat as an HP # at all.

I've spent some time looking around the internet for "HP71B Touchpad" and the only thing I found was the Oregon Digital Systems model 7100SI protective housing, and its' touchpad is colored differently and looks kinda similar and kinda different. Weird. I don't think mine would be water proof around the edges at all, and it looks like the ODS 7100 is.

RE: Last 71B?
Well, looked at the enlarged picture Dave posted, and even at that size, the lettering above the keys on his Touchpad doesn't look all that yellow to me. More silver? Mine definitely has yellow lettering above the keys. (I am using a cheap crappy ASUS laptop which might explain color variation)

Also, the background color on mine is dark brown, my 71 background color around the keys is more 'charcoal'.

No, you still need to post pics. When Bob said "rare" that translates to "something I'd like to have in my collection" so he'll offer to buy it. Mark Hardman will double whatever anybody else offers, and HP-Collection will end up with it. Smile Smile

Unless someone calls dibs or posts a WTB in the Classifieds.

Sorry folks, just wanted to speed things up a bit because we all knew where this was going.

Um.

If it is not in your museum, I would donate mine. But you guys can't turn around and sell it on fleabay to get some scratch to buy a TI SR1400 for management here to figure the payroll on.

Nah, I dislike touchpads, just wanted to see a real one, and your post showed that. But otherwise clear and accurate analysis.

TASP - There is no physical museum, so no need to donate. If you do want to sell/trade some old stuff, put a post in the Classifieds Forum.

RE: Last 71B?
LOL, I was picturing a nice (physical) display of all things HP at the home digs.

Sigh, it would be fun.

I suppose at some point I'll unload some items, but since coming here I have realized my goals are changing in regards to what I want to do about my HP stuff.

The 71 and 41 Touchpads are different from each other. From the back the 41 has what looks like small white nylon pads that contact the keys, the 71 doesn't.

The 41 has a molded rigid frame around the outside edge, the 71 edge shows the 3 layers, top, foam, and bottom, the frame makes the 41 much more rigid.

Other than the key labels, neither has any model, brand or part numbers anywhere.
