41 users: what's your SIZE?
Purely out of idle curiosity, I was wondering what everyone else typically keeps SIZE set to on their 41. I used to go with 50 as a nice round default, but that's way more than I usually need, so now I tend to stick with 32 since that's how much you can fit on two sides of a magnetic card. Anyone else have any specific preference?

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
100, since that's the default SIZE for the 41CX. I just leave it as-is.

Interesting, two votes for the default. I never need anywhere near that many data registers, so I always reclaim at least half that so I can stuff in more programs. Wink

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
Since I started on a C (with, later on, one memory module) I usually kept it @30.

I NEVER use more than about a dozen data registers, but 219 program registers has always been plenty for me.

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
SIZE 026 as a carry-over from the HP-67.
PSIZE-controlled most of the time though.

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
Normal usage : SIZE 017 → data storage (00 to 10) and stat registers (11 to 16) which leaves 2118 bytes for programs (302 registers + 4 bytes)

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
26 here. I don't remember which of my many programs needed that much, but I always have memory pretty full, and then when I need to write another program and don't have enough room, I'm looking for which one(s) I can delete or move to extended memory.

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
Always 40, though I've no recall at all why that number. I have a vague memory that some program used long ago (and probably never since) needed 40 so I set it and left it that way.

I should load a WALL file saved on a tape in 1984 to see what my 'normal' configuration really was then. Digital records are often more reliable than (my) memory! Smile

Ha, I'm impressed that you've kept good backups all that time. Smile

Some of the possible ways include these: The extended function SIZE? recalls the current SIZE setting to the stack. You have that function if you have a 41CX or an extended function module. The PPC ROM contains a synthetic program called S? which returns the same value. A standard program could do it too, using flag 25 and a binary search, but it would be slow.

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
100. Since RCL asks for two digits and for some reason I like to STO at address 99.

RE: 41 users: what's your SIZE?
Size 100. For speed similar to agarza. In technical class exams I would store intermediary problem computation results in registers 11, 22, 33, 44 and so forth since double pressing one key was the fastest way to STO results during an exam.

Where useful, for each STOred result I'd note the register number in the margin of my engineering notepad paper so I could later either double-check my computations or use partial results to work another solution path for a problem. Also, I had keyboard overlays with constants/conversions for specific classes and I'd pre-store these numbers in the top row 77 88 99, or for classes with lots of constants in 01, 02, 03 ... .

Unnecessary today with tables etc. in Excel. But, these days if I'm away from my PC I use Free42 on my phone and I have 5 softkey presets to store to, or I revert to double-pressing a number to STO.

Remember you can use the top two rows of keys to enter 01, 02, ...10, so STO 01 is STO ∑+, STO 02 is STO 1/X, etc., so you don't need to do two keypresses for register numbers 1 through 10. Same thing goes for RCL, FIX, SCI, ENG, VIEW, TONE, LBL, GTO, and lots more.
