Free Textbooks from Springer
Hello!
For those who have not read it elsewhere: Springer/Nature has recently granted free access for download of a wealth of textbooks on variuos topics in science, mathematics and engineeriing: https://www.springernature.com/gp/librar...u/17855960 It is a two stage process: First you download an Excel spreassheet with a database listing of the titles which then contains the relative download links. The publications themselves are available in .pdf ane .epub format. There are only two calculator specific books (both about clinical data analysis) but lots and lots about other topics frequently discussed on this forum. If only I knew where to take the time to read all of those... Regards Max |

RE: Free Textbooks from Springer
Wow !!, 383 PDF Books for FREE, that is a lot!. One question, have you find some specific for HP scientific calculators like HP-25, 67 or 35s? There are so much that is hard to find without opening each of them.
Any book number in the list that calls your attention because a programming list? Thank´s for sharing. Pedro |

RE: Free Textbooks from Springer
Thanks for sharing this Max!
It seems some/many of the books (6 out of 6 I tried) have free downloads only for the contents and a sample chapter, but there are > 180,000 books in the list so it will take a while to soft through it all to find some good ones. Update: In the "Filters" section, select the "Only Open Access Books" and the list you create will include only titles which are fully available. Too excited at the thought of so many free titles... --Bob Prosperi |

RE: Free Textbooks from Springer
This was quite fascinating. As Bob said, you have to filter by "Only Open Access Books" to get the ones that can be freely downloaded. But even then, there are well over 1400 books to download.
If you try to download those, some need you to fill out a CAPTCHA to verify you are human. You can identify these in the spreadsheet by the penultimate column, "Open Access", where FALSE in that column means a CAPTCHA is required (yes, this is named confusingly with the "Open Access Books" above but it is independent). That leaves 1051 of the books are then trivial to download by automated means, which I did. Although the remaining books needed a CAPTCHA, that was surprisingly easy to bypass, so I downloaded all those too. Now I have 1433 books downloaded in PDF format (most in English, with 75 in German and 3 in both languages), adding up to 13.5 GB. Thanks for sharing, and for the challenge! |

The authors have used their experience as masters’ and doctorate class teachers of the European College of Pharmaceutical Medicine (EC Socrates Project) in putting this text together. They have found, from their experience, that performing statistical analysis on a calculator to be a useful aid for the students learning and that statistical results can be obtained much quicker than using a statistical software package. For a short book it has a considerable number of chapters, each one being very brief. This is not a comprehensive statistical book and the reader needs to know when and why they use the relevant statistical techniques. There are a very small number of exercises for the reader to test their understanding and in some chapters there are no exercises at all. This book seems to be aimed at a niche market and does not have a great deal of explanation on the statistical techniques employed. If a student knows what they are doing, statistically speaking, then it is a good quick guide. As well as Statistical Analysis of Clinical Data on a Pocket Calculator, Part 2: Statistics on a Pocket Calculator, Part 2 © The Author(s) 2012 Springer ISBN 978-94-007-4703-6; ISBN 978-94-007-4704-3 (eBook) The small book ‘‘Statistical Analysis of Clinical Data on a Pocket Calculator’’ edited in 2011 presented 20 chapters of cookbook-like step-by-step analyses of clinical data, and was written for clinical investigators and medical students as a basic approach to the understanding and carrying out of medical statistics … … This book is a logical continuation and reviews additional pocket calculator methods that are important to data analysis … Followed by Clinical Data Analysis on a Pocket Calculator: Understanding the Scientific Methods of Statistical Reasoning and Hypothesis Testing © SPRINGER 2016 ISBN 978 3 319 27103 3; ISBN 978 3 319 27104 0 (eBook) It is our experience that a pocket calculator is very helpful for the purpose of studying the basic principles. Also, a number of statistical methods can be performed more easily on a pocket calculator, than using a software program … … Also, some analytical methods, for example, power calculations and required sample size calculations, are difficult on a statistical software program and easy on a pocket calculator. This book reviews the pocket calculator methods together with practical examples, both hypothesized and real patient data … BEST! SlideRule |

It looks like the link is now broken. I think I found it again by googling "springer open access books." Then go to the bottom of the page and click the "browse" button.
