[VA] New updates available in my HP site [Latest is Update #27, May 1]
.
Hi, all:

I'll use this newly created thread periodically to briefly announce any new updates to my HP site whenever I upload them.

I say "briefly" because, unlike the 11 previous announcements, I will not describe each file but will simply list their names. If interested, you can get the full description for the files (and download the files themselves) by just visiting my site.

I'll begin by listing right now the contents of updates #12 through #15, which were left unannounced when I took a two-month vacation from posting in these forums. Let's see:
  • Note: I'll appreciate it very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks in advance.

"With the advent of the Internet and my access to it in 1995, I pondered the idea of creating my own web page dedicated to HP Calcs and another one dedicated to Computer Chess and both materialized ca. 1998 as twin sites which proved quite popular until the free server where they were located was spammed to death and went out of business.

After a 20-year hiatus I resurrected the HP Calcs one and I have now resurrected the Computer Chess site, "Chess Tests" as well, the latter not as web pages again but as a set of near-facsimile PDF documents which preserve most of the contents with the same aspect and formatting the original simple, hand-created HTML web pages had back in 1998.

Chess Tests did at the time attract considerable attention and many chess authors (including true celebrities such as Mr. Robert Hyatt, the creator of the world-class Cray Blitz and Crafty chess programs, and top chess programmers such as Heiner Marxen, author of CHEST) sent their valuable results and many interesting comments."

HP Article VA040 - Boldly Going - Mandelbrot Set Area.pdf    in HP Calculator Articles (scroll down to HP Article VA040)
    • 8-page, 4-figure article belonging to my "Boldly Going" series, which includes a 98-step RPN program I wrote in 2019 for the HP-42S and physical/virtual compatibles, addressing and succeeding at the difficult task of computing an accurate estimation of the Mandelbrot Set's area in very reasonable times.

First of all, the various approaches in the literature are introduced and commented, then state-of-the-art results are presented, and finally the techniques used here are discussed at length, including comprehensive references. Two sample runs are featured as well as a main, "ultimate" run which achieves excellent accuracy in quite a short running time.

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #18 uploaded June, 3rd]

Hi, all:

I've just uploaded Update #19 to my HP site, namely the following 7 files (this makes 562 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks.

2020-07-07:   Update #19   (7 files, including *two* new Articles):

HP Article VA044 - HP-71B Math Pac 2 Comments and Proposals.pdf    in HP Calculator Articles (scroll down to HP Article VA044)
    • 25-page article, extensively detailing the new keywords and functionalities I propose for the HP-71 Math Pac 2, an undergoing new exciting project of Jean-François Garnier, the author of Emu71/DOS.

Now I’ve been very carefully considering what would be the most useful additions to the original Math Pac set which would still fit in the 5 Kb or so of unused ROM space available, while optimizing the usefulness and minimizing the implementation difficulty, and this article is the set of comments and proposals I came up with. It proposes and fully describes 22 new keywords, each graded for priority and difficulty, documented in HP-Manual-style fashion as if they were already existing keywords, including description, syntax, parameter types, comments, carefully-chosen full-fledged worked examples and a substantial rationale on its usefulness and why it was selected.

A future sequel article (VA045) will include my optimized BASIC-code implementations for all the functionalities described here (which I actually used to create the worked examples and their results), to be used as a reference for the eventual conversion to Saturn Assembler code (as new keywords and/or binary subprograms), as well as being of use by themselves in the meantime, by simply calling them from user programs.

HP Article VA040b - Boldly Going - Mandelbrot Set Area (71B).pdf    in HP Calculator Articles (scroll down to HP Article VA040b)
    • 8-page, 4-figure article belonging to my "Boldly Going" series, which includes a 9-line BASIC program I wrote in 2019 for the HP-71B and virtual compatibles, addressing and succeeding at the difficult task of computing an accurate estimation of the Mandelbrot Set's area in very reasonable times.

Note: This is the HP-71B version of my already uploaded article HP Article VA040a - Boldly Going - Mandelbrot Set Area Modify (42S).pdf. The Introduction and References/Notes are mostly the same but the actual code Listing, Usage Instructions and Sample/Ultimate runs are completely specific to this version..

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #19 CORRECTED July, 17th]

Hi, all:

After the summer vacations and as today it's Sep, 5th and I recently posted my 555th message to the forum, I've just made available Update #20 at my HP site, namely the following 8 files (this makes 570 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks.

2020-09-05:   Update #20   (8 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA046 - Boldly Going - Abundant but Rare.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 7-page article belonging to my “Boldly Going” series, this time dealing with a most fascinating topic in Number Theory, namely finding a particularly rare kind of so-called abundant numbers.

The qualifier “abundant” refers to a classification of the positive integers which considers them as being either deficient, perfect or abundant depending on the sum of their proper divisors, and we’re boldly going to find a most rare variety of the latter, so rare in fact that up to 10210 there are only seven of them, A1 to A7, the last one being a 205-digit number no less.

Anyway, my trusty vintage HP-71B quickly finds and display all seven, exactly. This article also features a very useful 5-line user-defined function to compute the "Sum of Proper Divisors" number-theoretical function and two variants, including several interesting examples of use.

And last but not least, there's also (click on any of them to see or download):

3 Selected HP Threads:

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #21 Oct., 7th]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #21 at my HP site, namely the following 8 files (this makes 578 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks.

2020-10-07:   Update #21   (8 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA047 - Boldly Going - Eigenvalues and Friends.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 15-page article, featuring a subprogram, PCHAR, which deals with an advanced functionality very frequently needed in all sort of disciplines in Science, Engineering and Computing, yet not covered at all in the HP-71 Math Pac ROM, namely the task of computing all eigenvalues real and complex of an arbitrary real or complex square matrix.

Subprogram PCHAR is very short (6 lines, 271 bytes) yet capable of quickly and accurately computing the Characteristic Polynomial of an arbitrary NxN real or complex square matrix in a format ready for computing all its real and complex eigenvalues with a single call to MAT..PROOT or PZER, so you get the task done using just two statements: calling PCHAR and executing MAT..PROOT or PZER.

Additionally and as a big bonus, it also computes real/complex determinants and inverse matrices with accuracy far exceeding in some significant cases what the assembler-code MAT..INV, MAT..SYS and DET keywords can achieve (none of which can compute complex determinants, by the way), and at no extra cost whatsoever either in memory usage or computing time. For instance, it will exactly invert my "Mean Matrix" AM#7 without batting an eyelid.

Many relevant, fully worked-out and commented examples included, as well as a detailed discussion on how to convert PCHAR to a binary subprogram or LEX keyword.

And last but not least, there's also the following files (click on any of them to see or download):

3 Selected HP Threads:

      HP Thread VA031 - 2003-11-04 - 15c or 32s which is better.pdf
      HP Thread VA032 - 2003-11-07 - 49gplus first impressions.pdf
      HP Thread VA033 - 2003-11-10 - Re Therapy Please repeat after me.pdf

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #22 Nov., 5th]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #22 at my HP site, namely the following 8 files (this makes 586 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks.

2020-11-05:   Update #22   (8 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA049 - Boldly Going - HP-16C Scientific Functions Part 2.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 7-page article, featuring the second part of the mini-series of articles dedicated to provide the HP-16C Computer Scientist calculator with a comprehensive set including the main scientific functions usually available in most HP scientific models, and some of them even in financial models such as the HP-12C.

Here I address the implementation of the 7 inverse functions, namely arcsin(x), arccos(x), arctan(x), arcsinh(x), arccosh(x), arctanh(x) and ln(x), corresponding to the direct ones already discussed and implemented in Part 1.

All seven inverse functions fit into a single, relatively short (100-step or 99-step) program, work over full or very extended ranges (up to −1050 < x < 1050 or 10100, depending on the particular function), execute fast over the whole argument range (a few seconds at most), and each function is called by pressing just two easy-to-remember keys. Many examples included covering the whole range for each function.

2020-12-03:   Update #23   (6 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA051 - Boldly Going - Climbing Project Euler.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 12-page article, featuring Project Euler, a fantastic Internet project which attempts (and succeeds, in spades !) at providing a huge supply of challenging math + programming problems which are immensely fun to try and solve, while learning loads of new concepts and sharpening your own skills in the process.

In this article I tell my story with PE and how I dealt with it back in 2011 during the second half of my summer vacations, using the vintage 1984-era HP-71B (emulated & physical), which is many orders of magnitude slower and less capable than the hardware/software combinations PE's problems are primarily intended for (i.e.: fast modern CPUs + high-level compiled languages), thus enormously upping the ante when tackling them with ancient hardware and interpreted BASIC. See for yourself how I did !

The article features no less than 7 carefully-selected, non-trivial Project Euler problems wich are discussed and solved, with code and full comments, and which you might want to try and solve on your own with your preferred HP calc.

Last but not least, there's also the following files (click on any of them to see or download):

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #24 Dec 17]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #24 at my HP site, namely the following 8 files (this makes 600 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. 2020-12-17:   Update #24   (8 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA042a - Boldly Going - Outsmarting PROOT (42S).pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 15-page article belonging to my "Boldly Going" series, which includes a small 131-step RPN subprogram PZER (plus an optional driver) for the HP-42S and compatibles (DM42, Free42, Emu42, etc.) dealing with a glaring limitation of the built-in function set of the HP-42S, namely the absence of some equivalent to the HP-71B Math ROM’s keyword PROOT, the polynomial root finder which finds at once all real/complex roots of an Nth-degree polynomial.

The HP-42S includes ample built-in functionality akin to the one provided by the HP-71B Math ROM (and the RPL models), such as complex numbers and operations, matrix operations, even Solver and Integrate tools, but it lacks any equivalent of PROOT (which by the way, works only for polynomials having real coefficients). On the other hand, PZER works efficiently and accurately for polynomials whose coefficients are real and/or complex, and can work globally (no inputs or initial guesses required whatsoever, just the coefficients) while also providing extra control to the user if desired. It can be called from your own programs or manually from the keyboard.

The article features tables detailing timings and relative speeds for the various compatible devices physical and virtual, plus 10 fully worked examples, including one comparing PZER's performance vs. PROOT when finding all 100 complex roots of a 100th-degree polynomial (200 components in all) to 12-digit accuracy, which if using Free42 takes just 20" on an iPhone 8 and as little as 0.4" on a MacBook laptop. There's also examples solving polynomials having multiple roots (double, triple, ...), and finding all roots with up to 34 correct digits when using a physical DM42 or the virtual Free42 Decimal.

Last but not least, there's also the following files (click on any of them to see or download):

3 Selected HP Threads:

      HP Thread VA037 - 2004-02-23 - Scanning advice needed.pdf
      HP Thread VA038 - 2003-11-28 - Hyperbolics with the Advantage.pdf

      Misc Picture VA014 - Sample - Will of D - VF171210AC.jpg

plus some pertinent Maintenance: \begin{array}{|c|c|} \hline Notice  \\\hline \end{array}

That's all for now. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2021 !

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Update #25 Jan 26]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #25 at my HP site, namely the following 11 files (this makes 601 files in all which you can see and/or download for free), plus a lot of Maintenance-related changes:
  • Note: I'll appreciate it if very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. 2021-01-26:   Update #25   (11 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA054 - My suggested New Features for Free42.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 16-page article, these are my well-pondered and researched suggestions of functionalities which could be implemented in Thomas Okken’s awesome HP-42S simulator, Free42, to very significantly increase its capabilities with minimum effort. All of them are based on the functionalities that I’ve frequently found necessary to use in my own programs to either simplify the programming effort or to very significantly increase the speed but alas, they weren’t currently available at the moment I needed them. This might be the time to remedy these omissions for good, most especially as they are mostly really easy to implement !

The article includes all proposed functions and functionalities grouped in the following 7 categories: Math functions (including Basic functions, Advanced functions, Number Theoretic functions, Statistics functions), Matrix operations and functions, Polynomial-related functions, Constants, Loop-related functions and functionalities, Utility keywords and Additional useful functionalities. Each function is described and classified for both its usefulness and implementation difficulty, with examples and stack diagrams where appropriate and a rationale for why am I proposing it and why should it be desirable to implement it.

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Latest is Update #26, Mar 5]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #26 at my HP site, namely the following 8 files (this makes 609 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):

2021-03-05:   Update #26   (8 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA042b - Boldly Going - Outsmarting PROOT (71B).pdf  (click to see or download)  in Section HP Calculator Articles
    • 15-page article belonging to my "Boldly Going" series, this is the original version for the HP-71B of my article "HP Article VA042a - Boldly Going - Outsmarting PROOT (42S)".

Though this article appears at first sight quite similar to the version for the HP-42S published in Update #24, it was actually written earlier and includes additional sections discussing the internal workings of PROOT and their differences, as well as more examples specific to the 12-digit precision available in the HP-71B, which aren't featured in the HP-42S version. Also, it can be very useful for HP-42S users to better understand the RPN version innards, as the BASIC code is much clearer and the algorithm is exactly the same.

The article includes a small 11-line BASIC subprogram PZER (plus an optional driver) for the HP-71B and emulators (Emu71/DOS, Emu71/Win, go71b, etc.) dealing with a glaring limitation of the HP-71B Math ROM’s keyword PROOT, the polynomial root finder which finds at once all real/complex roots of an Nth-degree polynomial but only works for polynomials having real coefficients. On the other hand, PZER works efficiently and accurately for polynomials whose coefficients are real and/or complex, and can work globally (no user inputs or initial guesses required whatsoever, just the coefficients) while also providing the user with extra control if desired. It can be called from your own programs or manually from the command line.

The article features tables detailing timings and relative speeds for the various devices physical and virtual, plus 10 fully worked examples, including one comparing PZER's performance vs. PROOT when finding all 100 complex roots of a 100th-degree polynomial (200 components in all) to 12-digit accuracy. There's also examples solving polynomials having multiple roots (double, triple, ...) and exploring how to use the options to enhance their accuracy.

RE: [VA] New updates available in my HP site [Latest is Update #27, May 1]

Hi, all:

I've just made available Update #27 at my HP site, namely the following 12 files (this makes 621 files in all which you can see and/or download for free):
  • Note: I'll appreciate it very much if you would please refrain from posting anything to this thread, so that it only contains the update announcements and listings themselves and nothing else. If you want to comment something please create another thread or PM me for any questions or comments you want addressed. Thanks.

2021-05-01:   Update #27   (12 files, including one new Article):

HP Article VA038 - DOMINOKU – Swiftly Solving Domino Grids.pdf  (click to see or download)  in HP Calculator Articles
    • 10-page article, this time featuring a program I wrote years ago for the HP-71B to solve a newspaper-style domino puzzle which goes by assorted names (“Domino Logic”, “Domino Hunt”, “Domino Dilemma”, “Dominosa”, etc.) where you’re given all 56 numbers (pips) corresponding to the full set of 28 dominoes already placed on a grid in some order, and you must find the exact location for each domino. For example:

My program can solve grids of any shape, not just rectangular, up to 9x9, even with holes inside, and as was the case with my Sudoku solver, it is a nice example of how recursion can be extremely useful to simplify the programming by implementing a search procedure which calls itself to go deeper and deeper until the puzzle is completely solved or else determined to be inconsistent and thus have no solution. 8 fully worked examples included.

3 Selected HP Challenges

HP Challenge VA030 - Short Sweet Math Challenge 25 San Valentin Special - Weird Math.pdf
    • 60-page thread (50 posts), a new "San Valentin's Special: Weird Math" S&SMC#25, featuring 6 Concoctions 6 dealing with weird, unexpected math results, including weird limits, weird infinite summations, weird integrals, weird graphs which are not what they seem to be, weird primes which are perfect in a very particular sense and to top it all, an alleged explanation on why some years are exceptionally catastrophic.

The various parts gathered much interest and a very lively discussion with plenty of code, graphics, solutions and comments being posted (including my original ones), as can be ascertained by the 60 pages in the thread. Don't miss it, it's great fun and an opportunity to acquire new exciting knowledge !

      HP Challenge VA513 - 2021-01-02 - SRC 008 2021 is here.pdf
    • 19-page thread (41 posts), in which I give a warm welcome to New Year 2021 by proposing three interesting little problems featuring 2021 for the readers to solve, including an amazing definite integral which will surprise everyone and their uncle, plus two nice, easier problems.

Lots of code, exact results, theoretical explanations and assorted comments were posted by a number of MoHPC forum members, including my own original ones. Pretty interesting reading at any rate plus you may try and solve them on your own as well.

      HP Challenge VA514 - 2021-01-02 - SRC 008 2021 is here - Printable.pdf
    • Printable version of the above challenge, so that code in CODE panels will appear.

      HP Challenge VA515 - 2021-03-14 - SRC 009 Pi Day 2021 Special.pdf
    • 28-page thread (38 posts) commemorating Pi Day 2021, including 6 new assorted appearances of Pi and other trivia, such as two very aesthetically pleasing integral equations (one of them somehow connecting Pi with Lambert's W function), a seemingly unexpected finite expression giving Pi as a function of e, an unexpected result for the summation of the volume of certain hyperspheres, ramblings on Kate Bush and Pi, The Simpsons and Pi, links to some unbelievable (literally !) "peer reviewed" papers on Pi and even a bilingual small joke (very small).

Lots of code, theoretical explanations, results, and plenty of interesting comments, including my extensive original ones. A very good way to have fun while learning some interesting facts in the process.

Last but not least, there's also the following files (click on any of them to see or download):

3 Selected HP Threads:

      HP Thread VA002b - 2003-06-03 - 11c Voyager.pdf

      Misc Picture VA270 - Hot Ball Bearings - VF170626AT.jpg

plus some pertinent Maintenance:
