HP48SX display (answered below)
(sorry, this is answered few posts below: I have to read first ;-D)

Hi,

I have an HP48SX with the annunciator display line non-working. I would like to replace it.

I've read that, apart from the HP48 family, the models 39 displays are compatible.

My questions are:
-Are ALL 39 series models compatible? there are many 39 series models: 39G, 39G+, 39GII, 39GS....
- Which is the best? I have read also this display provides better contrast than original.

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards

Ignacio

I am in the process of doing exactly the same upgrade. The 39G is ideal since it’s compatible and inexpensive.

My 48sx is almost done and I’ll post some photos later. The black LCD is pretty amazing in the 48sx!

Thanks Sanjeev!
I would appreciate you share your experience...I am very interested about opening the 48 with the less damage...

I understand that the models 39G+, 39GII, 39GS are NOT compatible...

Regards

Ignacio

If one line is not working, could it be a bad connection and be fixable without actual new display?

Woah.... Where do you understand that from?

My notes (I haven't tried this yet myself, but anticipate I will at some point) say the following models will all serves as screen donors to a 48, Some of them may be preferable to others on account of availability/cost, but I think they ALL work.
If there are errors (or omissions!) here, someone please chime in.

• 49G
• 39G
• 40G
• 39g+
• 39gs
• 40gs

All the ARM-based machines (39g+, 39gs, 40gs plus others) are NOT compatible, only the Saturn-based models are 39G, 40G, 49G.

I am unfortunately responsible for doing the same thing you fell for, and that's repeating information from a prior post without verifying it first.

The good news is the 39G and 40G are likely the cheapest of all the machines in the older list anyhow, plus seem to be more readily available as well.

Sorry for the bad info, I should go back and edit that post to prevent more folks from following my bad advice. (Done. I've edited all my own posts, but the original post with bad data was unfortunately quoted, more than once, in replies so the misleading list still remains in posts I can't correct.)

Thanks for the clarification, Bob, and good thought to correct the old post.
Now what am I to do with this pristine el-cheapo 39gs I bought out of China ‽‽‽

Thanks, Didier. I copied the link to that thread I referenced back in 2018 but missed the latest updates like post 39 that came this year. That info jives with what Bob just said.
Items like this would really benefit a FAQ that could be maintained in one place...

Also, another non-Algebraic option for these Algebraic "only" machines can be found here:

RPN on HP39gs and HP40gs

Although targeting the earlier models, it will very likely work on a 39gs with no, or maybe very small, changes.

Wow, that looks neat--really clean UI at least from the screen captures.
And actually, it looks like the author used a 39gs for the development, so I know it will work.
I think I will try that and maybe give that calculator to the kids to learn on.
Seeing the whole stack (plus Last X) is great, especially those new to RPN.

Now, I wonder if it is "classical RPN" or "entry RPN"... :-)

I am putting together a document detailing some of the steps I took. It will be mostly photos.
