50g new for Us $550!!?
Samson Cables lists new 50gs for $550.
Calculator source for a "discounted" bargain of $475 (also new).

It's just incredible how expensive these NEW machines are becoming. How soon for them to reach $1000?

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
Seems nutty to me when hpcalc.org sells unused ones in bubble wrap for $120. Somebody must really value that retail packaging.

I just took a chance tonight on a really nice looking “untested” one a charity shop had as a Buy-it-Now on you-know-where for only $20 (plus $8 shipping). I didn’t particularly need another, but that price for a spare is hard to pass by :-).
Actually, maybe it’s time for having one for newRPL!

Or... perhaps it's time for newRPL to move on to newer/cheaper hardware (Prime?). I got discouraged when the G2 was released, since all my work was focused (once again) into a defunct hardware platform, doomed to disappear quickly. So I stopped all work on that port, but perhaps I should keep going, so I can publish newRPL for Prime v1 before it reaches $550!!

I have an old v1 with the eyestrain color scheme now sitting idle. How far did you actually get porting newRPL to the old Prime? It would be interesting to see what can be done using the upper metakeys, particularly the Help key!

Is it really totally defunct? Last I heard the new Prime was only available in Europe at the moment. Also, there are plenty of people (including myself) who only have the original Prime. If you support only the G2, a lot of potential users will be left out.

sorry, I'm not a connoisseur of these topics ... does newRPL exist or is in preparation for Prime? and that for 50g is still in development or is it abandoned?

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
Well, if there's interest I can keep going with the Prime V1 as target. I started with drivers, got most of the basics but no screen yet. Then I decided the Prime needed a multi-boot loader so that newRPL (and others) could coexist with the Prime OS. So I moved on to work on drivers for that project when the G2 came out and I stopped everything Prime related. "To work on a defunct platform I'd rather stick with the 50g" was my thought at the time. Perhaps my decision was based on frustration and was taken too hastily.

PS: newRPL is not abandoned, it's in continuous (but slow) development. Depending on your needs, it's either close to finished or completely useless (there's about 400 out of the 800 commands in the 50g implemented, at this point it's a half full or half empty glass, your pick).

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
I would certainly keep going on the current 50g (and friends) platform.
There's no sense having two half-done projects, is there?

There are a LOT of people who like the 50g and there are a great deal of them out there. Most 50g fans have (at least) a few and as newRPL matures, more folks will jump on board.

If the price of used Primes were $25, I might think differently. It's not though, so please keep going on the current path and don't get distracted with the Prime yet. One good thing about working with the 50g is that you know it is not going to change. You have a fixed target.

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
thanks Claudio for your immense work, I'm looking for an hp50 to start using newRPL so I'll be happy if it continues to develop this. Smile

I don't know if I'll ever buy a Prime, for what it does it is less comfortable than a normal pc at the moment. Unless we can fully use RPN mode ... Wink

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
Hello,
Sorry for the 'nearly off-topic', but I have a question related to the 50g

I have one, used but in perfect working order, with its 'cloth' (not leather) original bag.

I want to purchase a HP Prime G2 so I am thinking of selling the 50g

Could you point me in the right direction about a fair selling price for it?
Thank you.

I am based in London.

Cheers!

I would keep the 50g if I were you. They are a rather sought after calculator now that they are discontinued and they will only increase in value. If you do still want to sell it then you can probably expect to get £60 to £90 depending on condition.

Please make sure you remove the main AAA batteries and the CR2032 backup battery when you stop using it. So often you see people forget that they left the batteries in the machine, they leak and spill battery juice all over the calculator's innards. Nasty.

well.. that would be me
I insistently refuse to buy one of those fake-rpn, iphone-like things that people call "prime"
I have bought 3 spare units of 50G for the future because I am still stock at the 48G ... go figure !!

Why "fake" RPN? It's never pretended to be an RPN machine in the first place. It does have a (somewhat limited) RPN mode but it really was bolted on as an after-thought by the looks of it.

RE: 50g new for Us $550!!?
Thanks for your answer, grsbanks

I have a couple of Casio calculators, one of them being the fx CG50 so I am not using the 50g at all, that's why I will probably end up selling it.

I had it without the batteries inside till a couple of months ago when I put new ones and it works perfect, all good there Smile

I will post some pictures in the classifieds thread in a couple of days to see if it sells.

Thanks again!

I would actually be interested myself but do follow normal procedure and put it in the classifieds to give everyone a fair crack at the whip. I already have 9x HP50g units...

Maybe that means it has the superior double-shot injection molded keys instead of the printed keys, too, if it's older than 1998 or so (in other words, made in Singapore instead of Indonesia).

I'd gladly sacrifice molded keys for black LCD, my 15 YO Indonesia HP-48GX shows no visible legend wear at all.
