RE: Sad News - greendyk.nl Website Closing Down
I just downloaded the HP-67 manual, by visiting all the pages in Chrome and manually saving them as "web page, complete." Some care was needed because the arrow buttons at the bottoms of the pages skip the chapter title pages, and also, the images linked from the css are not fetched by saving the web page, so I got all the url("foo") bits from the css files, removed duplicates, and created an HTML file with <img> tags for each one, then loaded and saved that. I'm reasonably sure that means I now have all the material to re-create this one manual.

The whole download process took me about 2 hours for about 340 pages. This was longer than I expected, in large part because when saving the pages, I had to edit every filename to change "foo.html" to "foo-pageNumber.html".

Any volunteers to download the other manuals this way? I'll be happy to do the work to make it all work together by fixing the links (assuming the various manuals are all built more or less the same way).

(For what it's worth, it looks like the HP-67 manual is the longest of the lot. Smile)

Can you post that as that is the exact manual I need please. Thanks.

RE: Sad News - greendyk.nl Website Closing Down
I downloaded a bunch of the pages already with wget. They have an annoying javascript on them that makes them look blank when you load them up, but the content is actually still there - just disable javascript and it is fine. I'm sure a quick batch find and replace would clean up most of the site...

I might have another go at it with a longer delay in a few days.

I don't see the site (I get a 403 forbidden).

Otherwise an idea would be to use an headless web browser to do what one wants.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headless_browser

I used it long time ago at work to satisfy the request of chrome and java (to download them automagically).

Wikis are great, Contribute :)

Hi,

I made the download from the HP67 and HP15c manuals on this website. Each page manually with firefox and saved as a whole page.

Great work from this guy! Maybe I find time to save the HP85 too.

best regards from Austria
Erwin

Bad news so all the other manuals are lost :-( We should think about what to do with those one we saved already.

Yep, I noticed stuff started to disappear as I was downloading. I managed to get most of the manuals, but not the ones for X-Functions and the HP-85B.

Hi,

I also tried to download these manuals, but most of them have missing pages.
The complete manuals for the HP65 and HP80 are available.
I removed the blocking java-code from the html files.
Drop me a PM if you are interested.

RE: Sad News - greendyk.nl Website Closing Down
Good news.

I, too, was extremely disappointed to see that the amazing greendyk.nl site was being shut down last year. The author clearly spent countless hours painstakingly and faithfully recreating the manuals, even going as far as to redraw many of the graphics.

In the days before the site shut down, I manually clicked on every page (to avoid being IP-banned with an automatic downloader) and saved just about every file and image on the site. This took me tens of hours. I saved my last files just minutes before the site went down.

Unfortunately, because the site was dynamically generated, what I had left over wasn't a functioning site. When pages were similar, I didn't save the extra copies (like for the navigation bar frames) in order to save precious time, so I knew those would have to be recreated. Because of the tremendous effort that would take, I set aside the files until this summer, when I finally had a chance to work on it.

What I have now done is pieced together all the files to make a functioning site again. It's a completely static site, so it's suitable for offline use. Even the original site had a number of 404 errors, but I have fixed all of these. In a few cases I might have missed some pages (like some title pages between sections), but I have adjusted links so that those are no longer needed. In the original site, on some of the manuals, individual pages were not directly linkable or bookmarkable, so I restructured the pages a little in order to allow this functionality.

Also, I noticed that the original site had a substantial number of typographical errors. I would guess about 95% were mistyped and 5% were OCR errors. I went through all the pages and fixed probably 2000 typos -- nearly every page had at least one typo, and some had a double-digit number.

Not only did I restore all 8 of the HP calculator/computers manuals, and all 7 of the HP-41C accessory manuals, but I also restored the guestbook, the Hemmi's sliderule manual, the Fender Telecaster pages and the page about the Thunderbirds television show. The only deficiency there was that I was missing some pages from the Telecaster manual, which I neglected to download, but another forum member here had saved it was able to provide to me the HTML, and I was able to recreate most of the images (with only 3 exceptions, in which I substituted placeholders) by using other materials I found on the web.

And most importantly, the HP-65 emulator and the software libraries for it are now entirely functional, too.

So I have made an attempt to restore the site to be almost exactly the way it was just before it was shut down, but actually even better.

Here is the new site:

https://archived.hpcalc.org/greendyk/

If you would like to download the entire site for offline use, the zip file is linked on https://archived.hpcalc.org/. Then it can never disappear forever.

If you have any problems with the site, please let me know. Also, if you saved anything that I am missing, I would appreciate that as well. I will also be continuing to fix typos as they are reported.

Great job, Eric, very well done!

I downloaded most of the greendyk.nl site as well, just before it disappeared for good, but I only got about halfway through restoring the manuals (fixing the links etc.) before other priorities put the project on hold... and I never even thought to go and fix typos! I am impressed with the work you put into this.
