(67) Program Search/Request
I seem to have separated or misfiled the program listing to accompany the Computer Navigation article (pgs 15-17) by Joe Diamond in issue 37 (1977_08-09) of Offshore magazine. Does anyone have access to this HP-67 program? An excerpt from the magazine of the article is attached for reference.

Hi,

I'm interested in this program too. It is helpful for dead reckoning like David Burch described in his wonderful book "Emergency Navigation".

best regards

RE: (67) Program Search/Request
I have this book with many navigation programs for HP calculator, but I really don't remember where it is. Give me some days and after I find it I can tell you what programs it has and if it interest you I can put here.

Found the book finally!

I had to use a mask to go through it, tons of dust!

There's one chapter about offshore navigation. I will do my best to write down the equations and related programs in the next few days. It seems that there's more formulae than programs.

Cheers

JL

I am not a yachtsman, but I think you will find some of the formulas in the "Inshore Navigation" chapter, under sections "Current Sailing" and "Distance, Time, and Speed", as well as the discussion on vector addition.

The article reference indicates that it was published in the Offshore Yachting magazine which is still being published by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. You might want to contact the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia to see is they might know someone who has the program or the contact information for Joe Diamond, the author of the article.

I was looking at the article again by Joe Diamond from the first post and realized that the drawings on page 2 was about calculating the tacking angle and time for a sailboat. In the book "The Calculator Afloat" (1980 edition), tacking angle formula's are covered in the Miscellaneous Computations chapter from page 209 to 218.

The article talks about a custom sailing program for the HP-67, but goes on to say sailing programs can be run on the HP-25c, Texas Instruments SR-52, and HP-67/97. I think the author's custom HP-67 program was written based on the sailing programs from the Texas Instruments SR-52 NG1 Marine Navigation Library or the TI-58/59 Marine Navigation Library. I don't think the Nav Pac for the HP-67 had these type of sailing programs. The manual for the TI-58/59 Marine Navigation Library can be obtained from this web site www.rskey.org. The program code for the SR-52 NG1 Marine Navigation Library are also available from the same web page. The sailing programs in the Navigation Library include (1) Modified Wind, (2) SMG, CMG and Time to Lay-Line, and (3) Distance and Bearing to Mark.

The Coastal Navigation and Sailing & Tactics sections of the TI Navigation Library was prepared with the help of Mortimer Rogoff, who authored the book "Calculator Navigation".

I just received my copy of "Calculator Navigation" by Mortimer Rogoff, 1979. I bought it used for $4 plus another $3.50 for shipping. It is kind of an odd book. The book includes the program code listings of navigation programs for the HP-67/97 and the TI SR-52 in the appendix. The book does not give any navigation formulas, but rather describes the procedure on how to use the navigation programs. The book also describes how to customize the programs for a particular boat or ship.

It looks like the TI programs in the book are the same as in the TI SR-52 Navigation Library, but the book does not include all of the programs in the Navigation Library. This makes sense, because Mortimer Rogoff is said to have contributed to some of the development of the SR-52 Navigation Library. I don't know if the HP67/97 programs in the book are the same as on the HP67/97 Nav Pac, but the acknowledgements says that Rogoff had collaborated with, and was a friend to, Kenneth Newcomer, the author of the HP Nav Pac. Newcomer was also a co-author of "The Calculator Afloat" book.

Many thanks, ALL!

I 'rediscovered' my misplaced navigation books. The aforementioned (& other) books were among the 'stored-away' contents. As time permits, I'll reattach the separated program to the article.
