I assume these are normal 9-pin connectors? Serial ports are typically 9- or 25- pin; 15-pin connectors (same size d-shell as 9-pin) are for video/VGA.

right, minor typo: ... caption of section 2. should read "METHOD 2", not "METHOD 3"...
