Try Mathematica or Wolfram Alpha (online) for a start. You don't really need to bother about "writing" your equations, the system is smart enough to understand what you mean.
Myself I was using a software called "Interleaf" in the late 1980ies/early 1990ies to write technical papers which had a phantastic (for that era) equation editor. Around the time the 48 was developed.
