I'm not sure exactly how Thomas did it. You can get the anchor tag name for a specific message in the old forum by inspecting the html source. In Chrome, I can right click on the message header and use the "Inspect element" option. In this case the anchor is named "48325".

You can then take the message thread's URL and append "#" and the anchor tag's name:
