Forum Quick Start Guide for Newbies (and me)?

I concur there's some need for such info for sure. I faintly remember some topics were covered already but it's hard to find them again (e.g. emoticons, LaTex, images). And there may be additional advice about placing a thread in the right forum since this belongs into "forum issues and administration" IMHO.
