Recommended battery pack for HP-19C?

Had one HP-19C with similar problem. In my case I used an external power supply with 5V and 1A current limit and got same result as you and power unit switched to current limiting mode. When removing current limit or using a refurbished battery pack instead calculator worked flawlessy! Obviously HP-19C has such a high inrush current when switched on, that you need a high quality battery pack and minimal contact resistance between components. Try to clean and/or resolder contacts.
