Authors could have chosen less confusing symbology. c does matter to understand the externally applied Moment although it is not used in the core Bending Moment calculation. Basically, if c is less than x or greater than x determines the role of the applied moment in the overall calculation. In the example, try plugging-in different values of c while holding all other variables constant and you will see the resulting Mx changes when c exceeds x. --Bob Prosperi |
