Well, the 34s internally works with 39 significant digits, and even XROM code uses 34 digit precision. So the result of the internal ex–1 function can be expected to have 30+ digit accuracy. Which should be sufficient for an evaluation in 16-digit SP mode. ;-)

Edit: seems to be chapter 1.14.1 of this book.
