By comparing the implementations I found out that the VB code in the "Article" is not really based on the WP-34S RPN code. They use the tanh-sinh variant by Michalski and Mosig. I've included this variant in the updated writeup, explained this interesting variant in some detail, and added their VB code to the appendix for comparison. The appendix contains both their VB code based on Michalski and Mosig and also their DE1 VB code that looks somewhat similar to your Python code.

The Michalski and Mosig variant requires fewer operations. I've aggressively optimized this further to just one exp() per inner loop iteration.
