Simple programming help with the Prime

When I try ECHO() the prime asks if such a variable should be created.
Is it that the functions like ECHO are only pickable by the stack context menu? That would be surprising because all other functions I encountered up to now are based on implemented calculator functions.
Does that mean the stack commands in the current firmware are kind of hard-coded?
