If you know the code number you can enter them from the keyboard in Windows.
Hold down ATL, then press '+' (on the numeric keypad), follow by the 4 digit hex code, then release ALT. This really isn't easier unless you happen to have memorized the codes you use often. You can also set up a code page as a shortcut for a limited number of unicode characters.
Hmmh, let me try my old-fashioned way: ± works with ALT 0177 (no '+' ! Katie, are you sure about the '+' ?).
