RE: Happy New Year!
Happy new year! 2017 for me me was, well, for something not bad (we got listExt!), for something else not good.

Of the myriads of problems that one can create out of any number, I cannot think of one! Damn me!

Ah no, found one (maybe).

sqrt(2018) . Find a fraction that better approximates this number. Where better: the smallest |x-sqrt(2018)|.
Caveat: Only 10 digits (even repeated) to share among all the numbers!

For example 355/113 is an approximation of PI and uses 6 digits.

Please share your result (and program/procedure) with spoilers. Like

Code:

here the real message. An hug for all of you!

2nd little problem.

Take the factors of 2018, apply the square root on each of them, sum the square roots. Then you have a number. Approximate even this number with a fraction. Max 10 digits as well.

Here are the 10-total-digits "best fractions" returned by the PDQ program.

sqrt(2018) --> 333547/7425
sqrt(2)+sqrt(1009) --> 223759/6744

So far manually I did not get past 44922/1000 , I need to improve my searching algorithm because I cannot do too many steps like a calculator.

Try using the tiny HP 48 programs called "SETUP" and "ITER8" in this posting. They will quickly find you the fractions you seek.
