Printing bar codes with HP 41?
The “HP 82242A Infrared Printer Module Owner’s Manual” states on page 82:

“Your infrared printing system does not have the following features available in the earlier thermal printing systems: … The Infrared Printer Module does not support bar-code printing functions.”

That implies IMHO that earlier thermal printing systems do support bar-code printing functions. But how? I did not find any hint towards bar-code printing neither in the “HP 82143A Thermal Printer Manual” nor in the “HP 82153A Bar Code Wand Manual”.

Any hint is highly appreciated.

There is a discussion on this here: http://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/...read=76218

The upshot is the 82162 printer will print barcode with the plotter ROM, but the 82143 cannot.

When searching for info on "HP blah blah blah", use google to search like this:

HP blah blah blah site:hpmuseum.org, which will tell google to search for your topic only on the MoHPC site. IMHO, this works far better than using the built-in search tools.

You don’t lose much by not having this feature, in my opinion, I did print some barcodes on the 82162A (with a program, didn’t had the plotter module) but it takes too much paper.

RE: Printing bar codes with HP 41?
I've printed quite a bit of bar code using the 82162A printer and the plotter module. Because of the limitations of the printer, the code looks like it needs to go on a diet. It prints 6 bytes per row of bar code IIRC. Normal HP 41 code is more like 16 bytes per row.

In addition you have to tape the strips on to a backing and copy if you plan to archive the bar code.

So you are not missing much.

Here are five approaches to printing HP 41 bar code - 3 on the 82162A and two on the IL thinkjet.

These are not original with me.

Fixed it for you. Don't forget the plotter module running a plotter. The IL version of the 7470A plots very good looking bar code from an HP-41.

RE: Printing bar codes with HP 41?
There was a way with the 82143 and some HW modifications (additional switches) and some syntethic tricks to print barcode on the first hp14 printer. My printer has the outer switch to change the linefeed to half way, but the inner switch is not in use (I have to fix it). The handling was terrible with the program to print barcode.
A better way would be a IR module for a PC and a software witch can print barcode to a letter format.
I nice project for cracks.

Gene: ONE of these programs works with the 82162A and uses nothing other than some synthetics and the Extended Functions. That is the one that is easiest to use because it does not require the plotter module or the CCD module, etc.

Just a 41, synthetics and extended functions. It does work!

Is the exercise or the final result the point here?
