As far as I can see, there was one incident so far with the PDF version. No risk that could not also have come up with a scanned Print. Copyright is not as murky as it seems. If stated clearly enough (which you always did, in my eyes), it protects a pdf in very much the same way, as it protects a printed work.

I see several big advantages of pdf files and if I put the number of obviously existing 34S's in relation to the number of 3.3 manuals sold, there is a huge disproportion.

For an open project an open documentation is tantamount in my eyes and I would be very unhappy indeed, if documentation where not available in electronic form and at adequate cost (if not free) any more.

Given the fact that no amount of manuals sold will ever bring the project to a financial break-even, I would kindly ask you to reconsider the distribution options.

I want to repeat once again that an electronically searchable manual (it could also be online, but that has its own disadvantages...) should be available and I would be willing to pay for access.

For the 43S you might plan two options: hardware plus manual on CD and hardware plus spiral bound. That would be a very transparent approach.

RE: [34S v3.3, 31S v1.2] Manuals
Hello Walter,

I would like to order a WP34S and WP31S manual to Austria / Europe.
It looks like for the 34S manual I may have to wait until 20 orders are placed. But that is not a big problem.

Please PM me the details.

Thanks.

Regards,
Ernst

Most of us know that being right and getting one's right are two different cups of tea. I don't want to get lawyer's business in here even with the copyright being clear about all that. Poka yoke is better IMHO.

I concur seeing several big advantages of pdf files. They are searchable and hyperlinks work within, for example. Printed matter has other advantages. So time will come when everybody can be granted a choice of personal up-to-date documentation in electronic and printed form - just don't expect that being tomorrow. We are learning by doing and times are changing everyday - many people (and even a few very large companies) think we live in the era of copy & paste for free.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

BTW, I pointed out more than once that even the total revenue is well within the cents/hour ballpark. It's more I don't want to see my baby kidnapped if you get what I mean.

Might well be.

Edit: Found a better English expression for sentence one.

Update regarding 34S v3.3 spiral bound manuals
(06-27-2014 12:10 PM)walter b Wrote:  According to information received from the printer just now, delivery of the books to me shall be early in week 29.

Received a message this evening stating that the printer gave two parcels to DHL now. Well, 40 manuals = 2 parcels due to weight Smile

I'm sitting next to another parcel containing all the envelopes addressed.

Total weight approx. 40 kg. 32°C outside, so not very cool. I think tomorrow will be post office day. Finally, they shall get to their new homes quickly.

Hi Walter,
Good news! Smile

However, the image I can see contains just a text string (but I can't copy it with Ctrl+C) with:
Right-click on it and copy image location gives me:
http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/attachment.php?aid=963
Trying to open that link the MoHPC portal gives me a message with:
"The specified thread does not exist."

What am I doing wrong this time?

Nothing IMHO. I think Dave has a little DB pr... emmh ... challenge since I uploaded that image but can't see it in my forum attachment manager either.

Wait and see.

Uploaded once more and now it works. Strange. The old upload doesn't still. Changed the previous post to refer to the newer upload Wink

Went to the post office in between and gave them all the envelopes. Had to give a lot of signatures for custom tags as well. That mail is going to go to FRA now - then let's see how fast a Lufthansa Siegerflieger is Wink
Enjoy!

d:-)

P.S.: Eric & Colin, your books are still on my shelf waiting for the necessary conditions becoming true.

P.P.S.: With the first batch sent now, I think I'll start two new threads - one for the WP 31S and one for the WP 34S manual. KISS.

My manual arrived here on Saturday (19.07.14)

Most probably the Lufthansa Siegerflieger wasn't involved Wink

The manual arrived today, perfectly packaged. This is a very nice book with a great spiral binding.
This is the new reference for my WP 34S. Well done Walter!

I've just noticed a small issue on page 264: at the beginning of the section "Replacing Batteries" the battery indicator overlaps the text.

Thanks for reporting. This was caused by translating .docx to .pdf - the translation is suboptimal. Anyway I found a workaround for the next batch.

My copy arrived today (Houston, TX USA). I have to say, the Lufthansa Siegerflieger is very fast!

Thank you for the extra effort that went into this version of the manual.

A few things which also slipped through ISO 9000 quality control and might be improved for the next printing run:
  • p. 127, comments at step 010 ... I cannot find the local label 11 ...
  • p. 132, lines 7-10, duplicate text?
  • A slighly wider inner margin ("Bundsteg") could avoid holes being punched through some of the text.
[/code]
Otherwise I am very happy with the manual and appreciate the work that went into it - even if it falls into the battleship class of manuals with its armor plated covers ;-). The metal spiral binding is very nice and handy, much better that those cheap plastic or perfect bindings.

Thank you very much for your work, Walter.
