HP48SX display - Krauts In Space - 01-04-2018 09:18 AM
As this is my first posting here - hello everybody!
I've bought my 48SX somewhen in the early 90s. As it always was a pain in the ass to me working with a display that's either to dark or to faint with poor contrast, depends on ambient light, it rested well in some drawers. I took it out from now to then, played some time, used it, but never got very fond of it like with the 41C/CV or 42S.
Now I'd like to know if there's a chance to get a better display and replace the old one - either by myself or a company.
The 48SX is still a great little monster that I want to use and play with.

There are a few more recent calculators that can serve as donors for replacing the stock 48sx display with a display with better contrast. Check this thread for an example.

The 48SX screen is particularly good on a desk in an office environment. The screen is lower contrast overall, yes, but the darkened pixels also don't cast a shadow on the reflective backing like the 48GX does, making it easier to read the SX screen at low angles.

Have you tried adjusting the contrast by holding down the ON button while tapping the + or - buttons (darken or lighting, respectively)?
I am assuming you have but thought I'd ask to be sure.

thanks for this link.
I'd do swapping both displays by myself. But how about the status indicators?
I looked some 39G$-models on ebay and found at least the 39GS with not suitable as the dot matrix fills the whole windows.

To the best of my knowledge, the 39G/40G, 39g+, 39gs/40gs, 48gII and 49G displays all provide 131×64 pixels, just like the 48S/SX/G/GX/G+. Only the 39gII, 49g+, 50g and Prime use displays with higher resolutions.

I know that 39G+, 39GS use a different display from the 48SX it has soldered connections rather than the conductive plastic strip connectors used in the 48SX. I have never seen the inside of a 40GS or 48GII but the appear to be the same construction as the 39GS. For the display swap 39G, 40G, and 49G would be suitable donors. I swapped the display from a 39G into a 48GX and it works great.
