Alternative to Ubergraphx? - akmon - 12-17-2017 04:27 PM

Hello, 5 five year ago I was very interested on a project made by Uberspiere. It was a handheld, called Ubergraphx. It had a dedicated numeric keyboard in a shell shape computer, which it was capable to run a lot of emulators, from HP or TI, or from your own, everything was there, so you had many calculators in the palm of your hand.

But the project was interrupted, sadly.

Is there any other gadget or similar micro pc that can be used with the same purpose of having a unit with touch screen (no more than 5"), keyboard, and small size that can run different emulators?

Thank you.

Right now, the GPD Win is probably the best device of this type.

Thank you for your suggestion, interesting gadget. I´ll take a look deeper at it.
I saw another product from GPD: the GPD pocket. Another interesting micro handheld, but a bit bigger and more expensive.

There was the (discontinued long time ago) zipit Z2 messenger with hardware and size similar to the calculator you are pointing to, which was completely open and there were many linux distros running. Everything about it can be found on the internet, but the community faded years ago.
Once you have plain Linux on it, you can cross-compile and install any packages for math, emulators, etc.
The cons are:
* Keyboard is qwerty, not really optimized for math, but if you are planning to run Octave you need more a qwerty keyboard than a numeric keypad.
* Screen is decent and in color, but there's no touchscreen.
* You are on your own, I don't know if there are any remnants from the community active somewhere.

Thank you for your feedback. Dindn´t know that machine, althought it´s very difficult to see a unit on sale.
Anyway it reminds me to Ben Nanonote, linux based micro computer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_NanoNote

Thank you for your advise. I searched and learned features of this machine, and as you said, it´s the nearest device for multiple emulation that fits in your pocket.

Purchased it, and now it has two emulators instaled:

And also, you can make a few tweaks for killing your spare time ;-)

Interesting. Do you mind sharing a review? Is it worth it?
Although for the prime I have already an android tablet (I love the fact that the prime runs natively on android, win, mac).

Well, we have to distinguish between two kind of reviews: the device one and the behaviour with hp emulators.

About the first one, there are tons of reviews out of there, you can view the written posts or youtube´d. You´ll notice the main purpose is playing games and how to run them as fast as possible. Anyway if you want another handheld focused on working tasks, maybe your device is GPD pocket, better keyboard, no pads, 7"inch screen but not so comfortable in your pocket.

About emulators. First, you have to know this machine has to be tuned from the very first time. There are lots of tweaks guides to read, for better performance or more comfortable usage. It took me 4 days to adjust mine.

But here are the good news. Tweaking for using emulators is not as hard as for playing games. Only the most important part is choosing the correct resolution screen, to fit to your view skill. Then choose the best skin for that resolution. And if you want, you can create your custom one (haven´t tried it). The performance is like a PC, very fast.
Finally, about usage, well, it´s not suitable for creating programs, but it´s enough for typing commands. Almost all emulator buttons are represented on the physical keyboard. That´s the advantage compared to a tablet for example. With the keys, touch panel and built-in mouse you have everything to reach where you want.

Remember, this device is the first handheld with Windows 10 that fits in your pocket. Imagine what you can install in a Windows 10 system: endless possibilities.

Yup but what is important normally is the user interface in those cases, and if one cannot really type, it is something to consider. Thanks for the feedback!
