WP34s the hard way - paulbloggs - 02-27-2014 10:45 AM

After my request the other day it seems there is nobody in Johannesburg that can help me with a cable.

I have the calculators.
I have the parts and the skills to make a cable. Is there a schematic of an RS232 to calculator cable? All my PCs have RS232. Is there a schematic of any cable?

The other problem is the overlays - does this eric rechlin guy exist? I have sent him many mails asking if he will post to South Africa. Not a single reply. So either it all disappears as spam or he is ignoring me.

Thanks
Paul

Here's a link to Eric's 34s site which includes the overlays: http://commerce.hpcalc.org/34s.php

Please use this address for ordering overlays (as stated in the manual): http://commerce.hpcalc.org/overlay.php. Eric ships worldwide, no need for asking.

Walter,

I am sure he does but I would like a reply from him first. USD5 is a lot of money down here with current exchange rate. And I would like a couple or three.

The cable guy sent me cables almost 2 years ago but still nothing has arrived.

Hi Paul,

Just so we don't go down the path others have gotten lost on, the cable is really an adapter. Your computer outputs RS-232 level signals while the calculator accepts 3-volt logic level signals, so all cables incorporate a transceiver. Details can be found here and in the WP 34S manual.

My recommendation is forget adapting RS232 to logic levels and just buy a logic level USB serial cable for $4:

Thanks for the advice on the cables - that is what I was looking for. I have some max3232 convertors so that is not a problem. Those usb/programming cables are not easy to come by down here. I ordered some meters from deal extreme in october last year - they arrived last week. Our postal service is atrocious and lots of stuff gets stolen.

But I really need the overlays otherwise this will be pretty pointless.

For the time being, please look at the pdf manual, page 151, in that matter.

Perfect!

I can see that just getting parts can be frustrating. If you want to make a plug and need the parts I can try mailing them to you.

Thanks Dave.
Where are you located?

I think the only thing I really need are the overlays and the original 30B software so that I may convert the calculator back to its original state if need be. My wife is an accountant and the financial side is good for her.

Is it possible to extract the original software before installing the WP34 software?

Dave

I see you are in San Diego so the chances of anything arriving are hopeless!!
Thanks for the offer.

IIRC, the original HP-30b SW is even on our project site on sourceforge. I'll check later. And for the overlays, please see my earlier response.

Walter,

Yes I saw your message and I looked at the book. That will work.
I would appreciate it if you can find the original 30b code and let me have the link. Just in case.
Paul

I cannot believe there is nobody in Johannesburg or even South Africa that has done this before?
Really?
