Gathering info about HP 41 and HP 42s - Cancuino - 01-29-2017 03:07 PM

Hi all,

I actually own a HP 48G+ and a HP 50G but I'm looking for a special calculator. It must be pocket sized and with some "history" on its shoulders, that's why I'm focusing on these two masterpieces.

Since I'm not an expert on neither of them I'm gathering as much info as I can to make the right call, that's why I decided to write this post here. I hope you can teach me many things about them.

The 42 looks like an actual calculator, great size and a lot of included functionalities.

The 41 is like a swiss army knife, you can add a lot of modules so it can do whatever you want. I've also read about the Monte Dalrymple mod. Could you explain me something about this?. It sounds interesting but it is really expensive though.

Thank you all and best regards.

Best single source of HP-41 info: http://www.*****/Intro.cfm, where ***** is hp41 dot org

Try an HP-42 Emulator (on PC, iOS, or Android): http://thomasokken.com/free42/

Lots of 42S Links can be found here: http://www.thecalculatorstore.com/epages/eb9376.sf/en_US/?ViewObjectPath=%2FShops%2Feb9376%2FCategories%2FSoftware%2F%22soft%20HP42s%22

The 42S is smaller, faster and has many improvements over the core 41, but it is a closed machine, with very limited I/O (printing only), while the 41 family are expandable with literally hundreds of ROMs, HP-IL to access disks, tapes, printers, etc. But doing all the extra 41 stuff does indeed cost more.

The 41CL upgrade may seem expensive but it really is an amazing value when considering all the capabilities it provides (up to 50x faster and ability to ALL the hundreds of ROM applications written for the 41 family).

So choosing which is 'best' depends on your needs. Check out the above resources and which is better for you should become clear.

Good luck, and let us know which one you chose and why.

I could not agree more strongly! I *finally* purchased the 41CL mod last year, and I've been kicking myself ever since for waiting so long to do it. The 41CL is simply fantastic.

[OFF TOPIC] Bob, thanks for sharing this information. Should you remember an implementation of Vicenty's great circle program for HP42s, please let me know, I would be really grateful. I have recently needed some geodesy in Excel, but I prefer Free42's solver by far.
