PIL-Box Mod - Dave Frederickson - 02-15-2014 12:13 AM

I decided to mod my PIL-Box.

No more cables. Smile

Resistance is futile.

Great idea! Very nice. I would do mine. 8-)

Anyone know where I can get a "Pil-Box??

Here you can found the answer:
HP Forums / HP Calculators (and very old HP Computers) / Classifieds / USB to HP-IL (Pil-Box)

Nice.
Were you cabinalizing some parts due to the integrated HP-IL connectors? A dead printer?
An HowTo is welcome (then we will start chasing "dead" housings if an harness HPil is not by hand).
If its 3D printed, then send completed parts to JF Garnier, he can perhaps implement it in his pilbox production (new variant "no harness" of the pilbox?).

I didn't cannibalize anything - just happened to have a connector available. A HowTo really isn't necessary as it's just a matter of trimming the plastic until the connector fits. Be aware, the connector and the inductor mod won't fit together in the standard case.

"just happened to have a connector available" from what?

RE: PIL-Box Mod - J-F Garnier - 10-04-2022 12:08 PM

A similar mod: here, with more details.

Actually I didn't make this mod myself, I like the captive HP-IL wire solution, similar to the HP-41 HP-82160 HP-IL module. You are always sure that the cables are with the PIL-Box.

Thanks.
Lets start chasing "HP-IL connector panels" (example from an old HP 82162A printer) for potential use at a pilbox for avoiding a cable coming out.

Remark:
- with an "HP-IL connector panels" in a pilbox, it will end using 2 cables HP-IL for making the pilbox connected to another HP-IL device.
- only 1 cable is necessary - cut in the middle - if soldered direct to the box.

An alternative in-between solution:

I reused the connector from the HP-IL to PC interface, for whihc I had no PC anymore.

This may be because I'm mainly a HP-71B user, so I need the HP-IL cables.
For HP-41 users, probably it's more convenient to have a HP-IL connector panel, and use the captive cables of the HP82160.

A forum member gave me one or two, there were a couple in an HP-75 bundle I bought, and I bought half a dozen from EduCalc back in the 80's to make an HP-IL switch box. I still have a couple brand new ones in my parts box.
