RE: DM42 - Geoff Quickfall - 05-14-2016 03:37 PM

I need it to print and time keep! The time keep is a modification definitely but the IR printing is not.

Any comments on the ability to print and time keep with alarm?

Nice job!

Geoff

Oh my, sweet. This is what HP35s should have been. Smile

Geoff, here's the reply:

Quote:of course it'll have an RTC to keep time. I haven't yet decided about an IR port. An optional BLE module would be nice too...

One CR2032 and USB power-able.

About the CPU and microSD support:

Quote:The new CPU has 128kB RAM, 1MB flash and it does some more tricks. Then there are another 4MB flash on board, and a card slot for microSD cards which is only available if USB is connected because they are potential vampires.

This sounds like a very interesting Allschwil meeting in October. I hope Michael will be there again.

What about speed? Will it be slow like the DM41?

Interesting images. Looks like a nice calculator.
I suspect I'll get one when it is available...

I quite like the 42S and the screen looks like it will display more than just X and Y.

No, the 35s was meant to continue the 3x lineage, and functionality-wise the HP calculator group came up with a great design.

[Oftopic] Well yeah, that is what number tolds, but we are living at 21st century so alphanumeric variables and softmenus (among others) isn't too much to ask for even simple and small programmable scientific[/Oftopic]

The 35s does have alphanumeric variables. The fact that they are single-letter variables makes accessing them especially easy despite their limitations. But this is (or would have been if bug-free) a calculator shining on the more simpler operations, with enough power to write quite some complex programs. It can easily exist beside a 42S, and actually did so for some time.

And no, it is not just the number. There is a very clear line from the 32S (and maybe earlier calculators) up to the 35s.

This looks interesting, as if it will display all four stack levels and softkey menus. (Presumably not graphics, though...?) The form factor, however, is starting to look like an HP48, which feels like it's a bit big for purpose. If I had my druthers it would have a smaller, true-to-history size display, but at least big enough so that the digits could be easily read by old gits like me. But it does look good....

If you read details above (and/or print the attached images) you'll find this new machine is actually a bit smaller than the original Pioneer machines. So it's very portable, but with a much larger screen, which can display all 4 levels plus the soft-menus. I have no inside information, but it's fully obvious that to act as a '42, it must include the soft-menus, and they surely would not display only 3 levels.

RE: DM42 - Jlouis - 05-16-2016 08:42 PM

As Michael stated on youtube, alternatives firmwares will be available wich may include graphics.

And the landscape DM42 is not dead... Smile

This is really a pity: why waste resources on lesser formats?
