Does anyone recognize the spaceship in the illustration for the article Space Flight? It's a modified version of Fireball XL5, the ship used in a British TV series using marionettes from the 60's by Gerry Anderson.

I don't think I've ever heard another person mention that show since I was about 8 years old! As I kid I really liked the opening and theme song and never forgot it. Thanks for the memories!

What a hoot... I've had that opening song on my iPod for years (from a CD called "TV's Greatest Hits") and so I hear it every few days! Smile By the way, that YouTube posting has a mistake in the lyrics. Instead of "compass of the sky" it should be "conquerors of the sky".

"Filmed in Supermarionation"! :)

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson brought us so many great shows:

Fireball XL5
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Stingray (My favorite of the Supermarionation)
Thunderbirds
[Another one - name??]
UFO (Favorite)
Space: 1999

I suspect all of these are fond memories for those of us old enough.

I have boxed DVD sets of, um... several of the above. Great for snowy, dreary days.

Yes, Dave, Supercar!! Thanks.

Good list Sylvain, I recalled the order quite wrong it appears.

Joe 90?

How the heck did I miss an entire series?!

Off to YouTube... I just gotta know.

I also read that "The Secret Service" wasn't syndicated, so it's initial run was it.

I have fleeting recollections of Captain Scarlet and the Thunderbirds, but none of the others. It must be the theme song that locked in the memories of Fireball XL5, do any of the others have such catchy music? (Yeah, Captain Scarlet had one but I just didn't like it.)

Most of the incidental music in most of the series (and their title/end sequences) was written and conducted by Barry Gray. Available on CD. I think only Fireball and Stingray had songs associated with them. As I recall, Aqua Marina from Stingray made it into the UK charts.

Incidentally, before Supercar there was Four Feather Falls, Torchy the Battery Boy and others

Katie - the opening for StingRay is here. The music probably will be familiar, amidst the explosions....

Nope, this didn't get any of my memory neurons to fire I'm afraid. It could have been damage from too much drinking in college or just that I've never seen this show, but I do love the giant fish chasing the submarine!

Time to fess up. Who went to see the Thunderbirds movie in 2004? It was directed by Jonathan Frakes from ST:TNG, who, just to try to stay on-topic, might have owned an HP calculator. Smile

This thread is hitchhiked by Fireball XL5. Can you either rename it or split please?

What "Fireball" has been for americans, "Orion" was for germans. Smile

I also showed it to my wife, who commented that if I was watching this as a kid, it's no wonder I ended up an engineer in the military, LOL.

Much more importantly, that's not actually a fish, it's a submarine, manned by the evil and dangerous Aquaphibians that lived under the sea, a constant threat to the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), of which Stingray was the flagship. These subs appeared in many episodes, and they seemed to almost always chase Stingray up and out of the water, thus re-using that scene many times; surely satisfying for the special effects guys.

RE: Fireball XL5 - TASP - 09-16-2015 02:15 PM

I have the DVD boxed set for Fireball XL5.

I've even noticed a few sound effects on that series that were reused on Space: 1999.

I don't have the boxed set for Stingray, but I'd say that was my favorite. Space: 1999 seems to be everyones favorite Anderson sci-fi show to hate.

TV count? The puppet homage, when the ship was throttled up, was worth the price of entry!

Guilty. Actually, I waited for it to come on cable, but taped it and watched it more than once. Lady Penelope was dramatically updated from the 60's to the current day. She picked a lock using the wire from her bra; not shown of course, but still a nod towards the mandatory risqué scene required in every movie these days.
