Pi Unleashed ... a very interesting book - Namir - 01-18-2014 03:38 PM

Hello Pi-calculating enthusiasts!!

I was browsing in the book Pi - Unleashed by Arndt and Haenel, published by Springer. It is an awesome book about the various types of methods that mathematicians developed over the years. The book tells the stories of who, when, and how various mathematicians calculated appromixations for pi. The book lists various equations and includes the number of accurate digits generated by each equation. It is a fascinating read! I highly recommend it.

Namir, it looks interesting, but at $200 a throw, they're not going to sell very many.

I've deleted all the posts here dealing with downloading a PDF or CD. In correspondence with Dave we felt it prudent to do so since we might be violating a copyright. While the book is no longer in print there's no evidence that the authors have made this available to the public. Dave received the following email of concern which prompted this action:

Quote:The thread with the adress: http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-462.html seems to me a problematic one. I'm from Germany and I don't know your language well and your right towards the copyright in usa, too. I don't want to offend anybody. Please have a closer look through the posts of this thread, because I don't want that this marvelous forum will be closed or someting similar (money penalties).
When I'm not right or have wrong attitude to this I beg your pardon. And I hope you haven to much work with this post of me.

I'm sorry to have started us down this path, hopefully I haven't offended anyone by removing the posts.

Interesting how book value increases with age. I bought this for $32 about 3 years ago. It is now over $200.

Arndt, the first author of this Pi book has another book entitled "Matters Computational." Full of math programs (in C). A PDF is available at his webpage http://www.jjj.de/fxt/#fxtbook
(hardcopy is about 1000 pages, at $0.15 each.)

Another absolutely delightful book is "A History of Pi" by Petr Beckmann (1976), in stock and inexpensive at You Know Where. It's too old to tell the exciting story of Simon Plouffe's 1995 discovery of the very first formula that can generate any desired hex digit of pi without calculating the ones before it. But the late Petr Beckmann was so smart, so funny, and just eccentric enough to make his book a really fun read. Highly recommended.

For the other end of the spectrum there's, "Pi: A Source Book", Berggren, Borwein, Borwein.

I found that Pi Unleashed sits perfectly between the too. Bummer it's out of print.

Sells for 40€ as e-book or 50€ in print. And you get >200MB of extra material (zipped) for free. How about learning a second language?

I just ordered the print version. From where do you get the online copy and the additional material?

Hmmh, Google isn't your friend but will tell you when you enter the ISBN: http://extras.springer.com/2000/978-3-540-66258-7 . And that will you lead to http://www.springer.com/computer/theoretical+computer+science/book/978-3-540-66258-7 easily.

Undecided

Thanks for the links. I've had a look at Amazon only because I have some gift certificates lurking on my account. The Amazon description is lacking the info about the included CD.

BTW, the original price was 59DM which translates to about 30€. I had to pay 50€ for the hardcopy. Where is the "Buchpreisbindung"?
