I guess I'll remove miniconda and try again to see if it behaves differently. At least pyilper is working perfectly on my Linux workstation, so I'm not stalled.

I cleaned miniconda off my Mac and re-installed it after making sure I didn't have a MacPorts version of Python 3 in my path and then pyilper again, and it is working now.
