I'm curious -- what is the lifetime activity of each registrant. Are they registering in order to access something that only members can see (e.g. to download a file) and then disappearing? Are they lurkers? Or are they bot accounts?
If those are legit user accounts... that's just awesome!

Only Dave can answer the longevity questions, but there are clearly many people that register just to post stuff in the Classifieds forum, knowing the readership here is about as laser-focused a group one might target to sell a calculator. When you see postings there, look at the number of posts the author has made, quite often that post is author's 1st post.
Clearly many other folks join thinking they just want to find out how to fix something or get an answer to some tech issue, but then seeing how interesting and helpful this group of folks truly is, decide to stick around and become more active.
Bot accounts have happened a few times recently, but they usually are found and killed pretty quickly.

I have been lurking these forums for well over 10 years , after a 3 year absence and a new account name I have finally posted, so I may be responsible for 1 doubled up account out of 2000

Living proof of my theory (as am I and a bunch of others too).
I would guess this is the number of active members (i.e. have not expired) since it says "We currently have 2,001 members registered."
I see you've not only finally posted, but repeated so 22 more times. I've encouraged new members to contribute, as I've found one certainly gets more out of it by participating than quietly lurking. We all were afraid at some early point to post, fearing we'd say something dull or worse yet, *wrong*, only to eventually discover that well all do both, so why not.
Its a rare and valuable thing here that if you do post something wrong, someone will surely jump in (typically within seconds...) and correct it, but usually only to share his/her own knowledge for the greater good, rather than to criticize.

I have been accused of being on "grammar police patrol" on some other non related forums, and in some idle BS conversations, but I must say the quality of script on MoHPC is of a very high standard, a testament to all who use this forum.
I will take all criticism as part of my learning curve. I hope you can all put up with me.

The old accounts didn't carry over to this new system, so you aren't doubled.
Many years ago, before registration was mandatory in the Old Forum, there was one guy posting under about 20 names. That was a large percentage in a smaller forum. I forget if he really had that much to say, or if he just a needed a lot of agreement. I've only noticed what I think is one purposefully doubled account here, and it's not worth pursuing.
Welcome, and may you have better luck than I have in convincing your significant-other that this not "like facebook" and it's not just socializing. -db

It's probably a common case to signup and login so you have a notion of unread posts. It's difficult to follow an ongoing conversation without a cursor.

No special access needed, just being a member allows you to throw all the user detail into a list and processes it as needed:
1) click on Member List at the top of every page

Sure, one could do this 2-thousand times I suppose, and collect all the stats for each, but surely no one did that?

I learned this as sysop on a RSTS/E system at my college in the 70s. Ugly...

If I were to do it, I'd use wget and crawl through those URLs in a more automated way. Then, a few scripts to parse through the html should make short work of extracting useful data.
