Articles Forum - Migrate or Link? - Marcus von Cube - 12-28-2013 10:12 PM

Dave,

can you either migrate the contents of the old articles forum to the new one or put a link to the old forum on the new one in a prominent place so that all the valuable stuff collected over time doesn't get out of sight?

I just added a "sticky" thread to the articles forum to point people to the old one.

(edit 1/2/14)

I've made this a non-expiring "announcement" instead, it works better that way.

Thanks Katie, that helps!

Should we encourage the authors to migrate their articles themselves?

Sure, authors should feel free to create updated articles as needed in the new forum.

There was no auto-migration because there was no software for it, because there is no guarantee of people using the same account names, because the one-way hashes used to encrypt passwords in the two forums are different etc.

In addition to all that, some of the articles were emailed to me in various states and "hacked" into the articles forum such that they don't look exactly like a "native" posting anyway. (ie they contain html formatting that doesn't directly map to any old forum formatting code, and may not map to any new forum formatting code.)

However, any author can delete their old article if obsolete using their old account and post the update to the new forum with the new account. I won't be accepting emails to hack into this forum because I now know what problems that causes in the long run.
