Forum Quick Start Guide for Newbies (and me)? - CR Haeger - 12-11-2014 01:10 PM

Hello,

I must admit that although I have been on this forum for a while, I am still in the dark on using some of its features, including:
  • Inserting Code examples
  • Inserting Latex Math text - and Latex math editors for that matter
  • Inserting versus attaching images
  • Other forum features that members may be strugglling with (Searching old threads etc.)

Would it be possible to post a short quick start guide as an important thread on one of these sub forums?

Best,
Carl

I concur there's some need for such info for sure. I faintly remember some topics were covered already but it's hard to find them again (e.g. emoticons, LaTex, images). And there may be additional advice about placing a thread in the right forum Wink since this belongs into "forum issues and administration" IMHO.

This one is easy. There is a small icon # in the editor tool bar that inserts [code ]...[/code] tags around selected text or starts/ends code entry.

Code:
This is some code
2nd line of code

I wish I were proficient with Latex. The easiest way is to look at some other post with an example and hit the Quote button to see the unformatted input. Just back out from the page if you do not want to reply to the quoted post.

It depends where your image is stored. If it is somewhere on the Net and you have the image URL (not a URL of a page embedding the image, just the raw picture data!) then you can simply hit the image icon of the tool bar:

Code:
[img]http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/jscripts/editor_themes/default/images/toolbar.gif[/img]

renders as:

If you want to attach a picture and embed it at the same time, you can do it as well:

[attachment=1294] does the trick. The file format should be PNG, JPG or GIF for that matter.

Google is your friend. Just add "site:hpmuseum.org" to your search string to limit the search to this site.
