Hi all.
Now that the fx-991EX has left the building and the CW misses the mark, what would you recommend instead? (anything goes—TI, Sharp, a high priced TAS 991EX, even Canon)

That is a shame. I really like the fx-991EX and really don't like the fx-991CW. I guess for this category and $20 price range in the U.S., I would have to pick the TI-36X Pro although I never did warm up to its multi-press function selection keys. I do wish TI would update the 12 year old design of the TI-36X Pro for the U.S. market. There is the newer TI-30X Pro MathPrint but it costs about twice what the TI-36X Pro does in the U.S. ($42 vs $21).
Edit: For that $42 price I can buy a Casio fx-9750GIII which has graphing, programming in BASIC & Python, more RAM, Flash memory, USB connectivity and with KhiCAS installed, a very capable CAS!
Edit2: The Casio fx-9750GIII often sells for less than $30 USD new on eBay. That is a lot of functionality for the price.

"The Casio Conundrum" sounds like a '60s cold war spy movie, maybe starring Michael Caine!
I'd recommend the fx-9860GIII but I also like the TI-84 Plus CE Python. For me, they're both easy to use and both are loaded with functions. I don't use CAS much but if you do, that's a major consideration. In that case, I'd go with the TI nspire CX II CAS. I'm not crazy about its document-centric OS but it is a very capable machine. While the HP Prime has superior hardware specs to any other calculator, the OS is too buggy for me to recommend it until Moravia does a few more major OS updates. You don't want to be in the middle of a class and have the calculator freeze up requiring a hard reset that will wipe all of its memory!

In that case, I’d make a top-notch baseball player since I’ve got all the bases covered--the big three: TI-86, 89, and the first gen N-Spire CAS.

I doubt it. The Casio fx-9750GIII has been selling new on eBay for around $30 USD since it came out around 2020, at least in the U.S.

Must’ve missed the memo. I remember when eB.. was supposed to be referred to as TAS. Has there been a change?

There was never a prohibition from simply using the word eBay, the notion came from an over-reaction to the policy of not allowing direct eBay listings in posts (or referrals to listings) to prevent the Forum from becoming a minefield of listings from eBay sellers.
And as TOS was in use for other reasons, it became common to similarly use TAS for this.

How does the 9750 compare to the TI-86, 89, and N-Spire (with and without CAS)?

I think they're just undercutting TI to get a bigger foothold in the U.S. market.

I'm pretty sure schools pressured Casio to modify the 991EX to appeal to middle and high school students. The 991 Classwiz was (and still is) widely adopted by schools in South America, Europe and Asia. They wanted to simplify the keyboard layout and it backfired badly, at least for university/professional users. So many keystrokes...
I bought an extra 991EX and will keepit sealed in the box in case Casio never redeem themselves. I'm seriously hoping they will release a 991EX v2 in the future.
As for the OP question, just stick to the 991EX, it's still the best option for the price.

I agree. The mystery for me: Why change the well-established STO/RCL method? Maybe I should call The History Channel to suggest that there should be an episode about this on History’s Greatest Mysteries.
