[42S] And now for something completely different - Werner - 03-28-2023 06:38 AM

Challenge: write a correct English phrase using only 42S commands
(CATALOG-FCN)
Since eg. INDEX is always followed by either a matrix name or IND something, it can't be used. Same for ASSIGN, DIM, INPUT, KEY, SOLVE - which would otherwise be words that you could use. FIX 10 is borderline ;-)
The list of words you can use (correct me if I'm wrong):
ALL
AND
BEEP
BEST
BIT?
COMB
COMPLEX
CROSS
CUSTOM
DELAY
DIM?
DOT
EDIT
END
ENTER
FACT
GAMMA (not so sure. it's simply the name of the Greek letter)
GROW
LIST
LOG
MAN
MEAN
MENU
NORM
NOT
OFF
OLD
ON
OR
PIXEL
POLAR
PROMPT
QUIET
RAN
REAL?
SEED
SIGN
SIN
SIZE
SLOPE
STOP
SUM
TAN
TRACE
WRAP

'STOP OLD MAN' would be an example. Can you find longer ones?

This challenge is inspired by a hilarious response on comp.sys.hp48, 25 years ago (!!), with the following '48 program in the same vein:
\<< ROLL OVER AND ROT \>>
I pray for the author of this one-second marvel ;-)

Werner

ON SIGN PROMPT ENTER AND EDIT LIST, ON BEEP STOP

(Not sure it’s a correct English phrase…)

RE: [42S] And now for something completely different - EdS2 - 03-28-2023 07:37 AM

FACT
NO MEAN OLD MAN RAN BEST ON POLAR SLOPE

Edit: no, no NO...

RE: [42S] And now for something completely different - BruceH - 03-28-2023 06:33 PM

This could go ON AND ON AND ON AND...

RE: [42S] And now for something completely different - BruceH - 03-28-2023 07:48 PM

I showed this to my wife and she came up with this Easter-themed phrase: Sign on cross - enter quiet best man end all sin and grow

A clear winner!!! Smile

The rules, and the limits, need to be stated. This one meets them!

But, I like your wife's entry as well. So far, a 2nd-place, but more time will tell...

RE: [42S] And now for something completely different - EdS2 - 03-28-2023 10:06 PM

i seem to have used NO which isn't even one of the admissible words...

Due to the recent switch to daylight saving time, here in EEC…

This is fantastic, and will be hard to beat. Also, indeed the '-' is a hyphen and can be used as well!
Can someone make a screensaver for the DM42 out of it?

I guess one could use numbers as well ...

1 MEAN OLD MAN RAN QUIET ON BEST SLOPE AND NOT ON COMPLEX SLOPE 2 TRACE AND GROW SEED ON CUSTOM POLAR BIT?

that should be 'RAN QUIETLY' to be correct, but you can move the QUIET forward
1 QUIET MEAN OLD MAN RAN ..
the use of 1 I find acceptable but not the 2 in exchange for 'TO' ;-)

Yes, I guessed that was a bit too much stretching of the rules, fair enough! ;-)

Cheers,

Her phrase might be the winner.

ALL ENTER AND SIN

Bonus points for having it end with END - so it can be a program ;-)

How about: score = the number of distinct commands used.
In case of a tie, total length decides.
That would allow ON AND ON .. but it would only have a score of 2.
Not sure what you mean by 'limits' though.

Cheers, Werner
