Where exactly does the following part go and what is the orientation?

The closest I can see in the very hard to see picture in the Service Manual is that it is part "20 - SHIELD, display" but no way to see the exact orientation (it's not symmetrical).

It was loose in a 41cv that had already been opened.

This picture should work for you. That plastic spacer goes at the very top of the display. You can see it in this photo, in the left image.
