DM41X Christmas - JeffJ - 01-04-2021 03:22 PM

[attachment=8983]
Yesterday I received a slightly-late Christmas present from my son - an amazing DM41X to replace my failed HP-41C. What an amazing calculator by Michael Steinmann and his Swiss Micros team. I immediately noted that the DM41X keyboard feel was improved over even the absurdly-powerful DM42 I got a year ago. There is no question but what Swiss Micros has the finest RPN calculators money can buy. And they are far cheaper in terms of real dollars (my U.S. parlance) than the HP calculators of the 1970's and even 1980's. It has really brought back the joy and mystique of yester-year's calculators.

We've put out an update since the version installed on your unit.

I would be very grateful to You for the image of the front panel. SwissMicroc also stated in the advertising booklet that << ... a stainless steel case and a Gorilla Glass screen ...>> . Is this true? Why then is a piece of cheap plastic pasted over this super LCD that impairs visibility?

Hlib - if you click on the small picture in my post a few hours ago, it should pull up a nice-sized, detailed image of the entire face of the calculator and you can see that the screen has excellent visibility, clarity and contrast - a welcome improvement over the HP-41C display.

Can You vouch for information from SwissMicros: << ... a stainless steel case and a Gorilla Glass screen ...>>? I can not distinguish in the photo the presence of a plastic cover and the quality of protection of the LCD from scratches.

There's no way to test materials and see what they are. I can only vouch that the unit in my hand has a very nice-feeling metal case and very nice, crisp, easy-to-read display. The calculator feels like a quality unit that was made to last, and I'm very pleased to own one. Can't imagine you would be disappointed with the quality of this calculator, but if you're really concerned, don't order one.

Just flashed the v2.1 update. It was a very simple process. Nice!

I am very grateful to You for a detailed report on the characteristics of this wonderful calculator. Exactly the same thing was said to me on this forum about the hp-39gii (800 hours of operation from one set of batteries and so on), about the hp-39gs and about the hp-50g. And today, in the subway underpass, I was offered a new iPhone for $75 and said almost the same words.

Mine arrived yesterday - by the serial number I guess I'm amongst the first 50 - anyhow I copied the QUAD programme from the old HP41 manual, and it worked fine.

The metal case gives the calculator quite a cold feel in the hands and the enter key is a touch creaky - I don't think you can predict a long term aesthetic judgement early doors but, I expect it will grow on me.

My major concern is the learning curve to climb where modules are loaded by computer and bugs need fixes, etc.
