There are two timing belts in the HP 85 printer that decay with time and turn to goo. Most likely you will need to replace them, which is fairly straightforward if you can find the belts! I finally found a place an online store where you can get them for a few $, no minimum quantity, both where in stock and shipped immediately.

The long belt for the printer head is a 1/8" wide 175T80 (175 teeth, 0.080 pitch), SDP/SI part number A 6B16-175012, order here:

The short belt for the paper advance is a a 3/16" wise 78T80 (78 teeth, 0.080 pitch), SDP/SI part number A 6B16-078018, order here:
