(RPL/HP48) In praise of the black LCD - markhen - 11-01-2018 11:22 PM

I've been wanting to explore RPL more (old RPN hand here), so I acquired some older RPL machines (HP28C/S - interesting form-factor (maybe not too practical, but interesting); HP-48SX - "proper" HP keyboard) but the dim and viewing angle dependent displays just made them frustrating to use. My eyes do have 61 years of hard use on them, but generally they work ok... The HP-50g display is fine, but the keyboard - particularly the small ENTER??? Eventually I was able to get a 48 model with a BLACK LCD (48G+ in my case) -- and -- heaven!! Great display, great keyboard, ENTER as God intended - and now I can explore RPL :-)

Black LCD models are not easy to find, or cheap, but I do recommend. I see posts about taking 39 black displays and transplanting into 48s, not for faint of heart, but I have a donor and may attempt this on my 48SX....

(BTW I simply cannot use the much-loved HP-42S for the same reason - the washed out and angle dependent display is just unusable for me...)

You said it all!

Congratulations on the new HP 48g+ black LCD!

Enjoy!
