stopwatch features on calculators - pier4r - 09-08-2018 03:13 PM

So I often use a stopwatch with laps or split times. For some activities I find it really important.

For the hp 50g I am aware of the program of DavidM. Multistopwatch , really well done (well, DavidM quality is best quality).
https://www.hpcalc.org/details/7410

I try to employ somehow also the other calculators. For the ti89 I tried a couple(with which more than math use mostly ready made programs, as there are a ton. Like tichess that is not bad, pacman and co) .
jtimer has a nice interface, 5 laps, but the timer is too inaccurate ( https://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/114/11490.html ) .
Ztimer has a super simple interface, last lap, but the timer is accurate. https://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/398/39806.html .
Split52 simply doesn't work. https://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/369/36988.html .
Does anyone else knows something close to multistopwatch for the ti 89 with an accurate timer?

What about the casio 9860 series? (I know that there casio basic doesn't even offer timing features but someone maybe did something with the casio SDK).

What about the hp prime?

What about the ti nspire ?

Others (hp, ti, casio, sharp, numworks, whatever)? I would bet that the 41 and 42 have stopwatch features with plenty of split / lap times.

In general the best stopwatch as application (not as a watch!) for a mobile device that I know is multitimer on android. It has even the history of the recorded time by a timer. I know that having that on a calculator is too much, anyway multistopwatch is already quite neat.

The HP-41C or CV with a Time Module and the HP-41CX have that.

The SwissMicros DM41L is basically a 41CX and has that built in as well.

SwissMicros DM42 has it too.

On the HP Prime, the only event timer I know of is that in my ZIPP program.

It's OK for timing thunderstorm distances, but there is no lap timer.

The 42S doesn't have any time features (apart from the HMS conversion functions), but Free42 and the DM42 have a clock and associated functions.

For TIs, you've got the 89 Titanium and Voyage 200, and certain models of the 84 Plus (including the most recent 84 Plus CE). All of these expose a timer with only 1-second resolution, though it might be possible to read millisecond precision via assembly.

None of the Casios have built in clock/timing features, though I think it can be done to some degree with the C SDK.

And of course the 48SX/GX have all the same clock features that are in the 50G.

For Casio You can try Casio Digital Watch Extended Version (file extension is g1a)

If you don't mind a non scientific calculator, CASIO ST-1 is a classy and beautiful one.

Have a look here

Cheers

Specifically, Free42 and the DM42 have only ADATE, ATIME, ATIME24, CLK12, CLK24, DATE, DATE+, DDAYS, DMY, DOW, MDY, and TIME.

Since this thread started with a post titled "stopwatch features on calculators," I think I should point out that Free42 and the DM42 do not have stopwatch or alarm functions.

Yeah, Free42 won't show you a stopwatch running in real time, but if you just need to mark start/split/end times and analyze the data after the fact, it works well.

I keep an RFT MR411 with my photography development kit. Allows me to do the necessary calculations (mixtures for the chemicals, temperature compensation, etc). It is a but cumbersam due to the lack of RPN, but fine for these simple tasks. And it has a stopwatch (with lap and split) that I use to time the development process.
It would be much nicer to have an HP55 for the job, but I don't want to keep it with all the chemicals...

The "Utilities" add-in by Gabriel (gbl08ma) for the Casio PRIZM fx-CG10/CG20 and fx-CG50/Graph 90+E can have up to 20 up or down timers running at once. They can be paused and unpaused, but there is no split-time feature, currently. Also, the whole utilities add-in is standalone. I don't think its various features can be driven by other programs.

Anyway I was expecting some link to some super polished stopwatch programs for the 41 at least, like the modules of Angel M. I can understand that there are none for the Free42 since it has a small display. I think the DM42 will be more adept to show timers.

Still I am amazed by the multistopwatch on the 50g.

RE: stopwatch features on calculators - pier4r - 09-09-2018 12:36 PM

Found another functional program for the 50g. stopwatch C with a basic interface compared to multistopwatch.

None are needed. There's "SW" built into the Time Module (and into the DM41L).

Someone at hp (identity not known) created a stopwatch program for the 48s/x, and it was later ported to the 48g/x. To differentiate between the two, they were referred to as SW-A and SW-B. I believe Andreas used those as the inspiration for his SW-C version which brought the same functionality to the 49-50 platform.

Many years ago I had a 41 setup that included a Time Module (among other things). That was my original inspiration for creating what eventually became Multistopwatch. After I realized what kind of performance the platform supported, I decided to try drawing (and servicing) multiple timers simultaneously to see if I could make it work -- up to three worked well, but adding a fourth created too much overhead for the system to respond adequately. Having multiple timers active on the display seemed like a novelty at first, then I started to realize that I was using them more often than I would have thought. The hp calculator world didn't need another stopwatch, but it got one anyway. :-)

Ok then now I learned about it. My bad!

David thanks for the additional info bits!

Old HP 55 has a stopwatch feature.

RE: stopwatch features on calculators - pier4r - 09-09-2018 07:26 PM

Also a test with ztimer on the ti89 depleted its batteries (and finally I could use the BC700!). This let me realize a pretty impressive fact. Calculators, phones and similar mobile devices may be used as advanced stopwatches, but they drain a lot of energy.

A digital watch is actually showing all the single seconds changes for a year or more (so 31 million changes or more), and it uses normally a fraction of the energy required by a calculator. Pretty impressive.
