On the 65 the user diagnostic program looks different from other programs when viewed in w/prgm mode. It shows a "-" after the key codes. I wonder why it looks like that. Can anyone explain?
I started wondering when I compared an original 65 with Tonys emulation. On Tonys emulation there is a space on front of the"-", on the original there isn't.
Here is a picture:

I cannot say much about the HP65 diagnostics program, but the "-" on the HP65 is displayed when all 100 steps are occupied so that adding one more step would delete another one. Delete one step and the "-" disappears.

Ah, that's clever. Thanks for enlightening me!
Are there different rom versions that display the - in different positions?

The minus signs are explained at the bottom of p. 58 in the '65 Owner's Manual. a 2nd one is also shown on the left edge when at the 'bottom' of memory (step 100)

Thanks to Dieter for this (apparently) long-forgotten fact.
